LONDON, United Kingdom – Senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, team reporter Kainani Stevens and correspondent John Shipley offer quick thoughts on the Jaguars’ 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans in a 2026 Week 6 game at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom, Sunday
Oehser…
- Last-second giveth, last-second taketh. The NFL is about situations and moments – and if the Jaguars won most of those moments in the season's first London game, they lost just enough Sunday to cost them what would have been a critical AFC South victory. The Jaguars on Sunday rallied impressively in the second half, with clutch plays from quarterback Trevor Lawrence, wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and – once again – kicker Cam Little giving them a chance at a dramatic victory. But the Jaguars also squandered a first-half red-zone opportunity when cornerback Kamari Lassiter intercepted Lawrence in the end zone two plays after a questionable holding penalty on tight end Brenton Strange negated a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Bhayshul Tuten. A special-teams penalty for too many players on the field and a third-down penalty on cornerback Jarrian Jones extended two Houston third-quarter touchdown drives. "We made a few too many mistakes that cost us in the end," Lawrence said. "It was a one-score game, like most of them are. It ended up hurting us this game. We've gotten away with a little bit in the past." The Jaguars overcame errors in a last-play victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. This week, the mistakes were justtoomuchbarely to overcome in a last-play loss. The result: The Jaguars lost when they could have won and kept a capable rival alive in the AFC South.
- Travis time. Yes, Sunday was disappointing for the Jaguars. And there are issues that will be debated and dissected during this week's Week 7 bye. But if there was an obvious, long-term positive from Sunday, it's the continued – and rapid – development of second-year wide receiver/cornerback Hunter on both offense and defense. "I've been doing this stuff since I was a baby," Hunter said. "We just have to come out with a win." Hunter, who began the season playing predominantly on defense after missing the last 10 games of his rookie season with a knee injury, played extensively on defense again Sunday but also factored more significantly offensively than previously was the case this season. He not only had a fourth-quarter interception that kept the Jaguars close, but he also had four receptions for 59 yards and a seven-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that pulled the Jaguars to within 31-28 with 11:26 remaining. There was nothing gimmicky or fluky about Hunter on either side of the ball Sunday. We're starting to see the vision for the player the Jaguars selected No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, and that's an encouraging vision for the final 11 games.
Sexton…
- No happy ending at Wembley this week. The Jaguars watched helplessly as the Texans made their way into field goal-range Sunday. Truthfully, the defense had been helpless most of the afternoon; they had no answer for Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who took the Jaguars' defense apart almost surgically completing 71 percent of his passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. The Texans also ran effectively in the second half, including a 25-yard touchdown by third-string running back Jawhar Jordan, who was elevated off the practice squad Saturday. But the Jaguars couldn't solve the Texans passing attack except for Hunter's end-zone interception that set up their game-tying field goal. There wasn't enough pressure, and big coverage errors made it too easy for Stroud.
- Lawrence gave them a chance. Lawrence threw for 306 with four touchdowns and more than made up for a first-half end-zone interception. He put his team in a position to go to overtime; every time the Texans pushed the lead to ten in the second half, Lawrence cut it back to three and he was really good against an excellent defense. He was really good because he had plenty of time in the pocket, with tackles Walker Little and Cole Van Lanen more than holding their own against Texans ends Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter. The Texans' pass-rushing duo combined for four tackles, but neither got a sack and neither seemed to even affect Lawrence. The offense will be fine, but the defense must dig deep after another game in which the Jaguars didn't sack the quarterback or get the opposing offense off the field often enough in the second half.

Stevens…
- Special teams were special again. Jaguars kicker Cam Little lived his childhood dream last week, kicking a game-winning field goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This week, Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn played hero. Fairbairn's 49-yard field goal as time expired gave the Texans the victory after a back-and-forth game. A dramatic finish didn't go Jacksonville's way this time and the Jaguars will have a lot to clean up during – and after – this week's bye week.
- Hunter delivers on both sides of the ball. Hunter has solidified himself as a critical part of the secondary, but he played a massive role on offense Sunday as well with four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Hunter defensively had three tackles, a pass defensed and an interception. The touchdown and interception came on back-to-back drives. Hunter seemingly got increased reps on offense after wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. struggled in the first half. I expect this increased offensive role to continue moving forward.
Shipley …
- Hunter was special. These are the types of games for which the Jaguars traded up for Hunter. While it was not four quarters of domination, he packed enough highlights into the fourth quarter to make up for it. Hunter was terrific in the fourth quarter, catching three passes for 40 yards and a seven-yard touchdown on one drive to cut the lead to 31-28 with 11:26 remaining. On the next drive, Hunter became the first player in the NFL this season to intercept Stroud with a red-zone interception that set the Jaguars up to tie the game with Little's 60-yard field goal. Hunter was a difference-maker for the Jaguars on both sides of the ball on Sunday.
- Still in a good spot. Anytime you lose an AFC South game, it's a bad feeling. Still, the Jaguars are entering their bye week at 4-2 record and have a lead in the AFC South. The first six games were widely viewed before the season as the toughest part of the Jaguars' schedule, and the Jaguars have gotten to the other end of it with one of the AFC's best records. Losing a close game to a rival will sting, but the Jaguars remain in a good spot. They can also make up ground in the division with an AFC South battle out of the bye against the Indianapolis Colts on November 1. The Jaguars lost Sunday, but they have bigger things still ahead.
