Notable Moments from Jaguars' Loss to Texans in Week 6

101826-KEY-PLAYS-THUMB

Correspondent John Shipley examines five key plays from the Jaguars' 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans in a 2026 Week 6 game at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom, Sunday

1.Going hunting. The Jaguars and Head Coach Liam Coen have stressed that Travis Hunter's offensive role will continue evolving and developing, and it did that on Sunday. Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, had his best day on offense this season and caught four passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. This included a drive on which he caught three passes for 40 yards with a 7-yard touchdown reception to make it a three-point game early in the fourth quarter. "That was part of the plan, getting him a little bit more involved early," Coen said. The Texans drove to the Jaguars' 4-yard line on the ensuing drive, but Hunter intercepted Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud on second-and-goal from the 4 with 3:53 remaining to keep the Jaguars within 31-28. Hunter became the first NFL player since 2002 with a touchdown reception and an interception in the same game. "Made some critical plays for us on both sides of the football obviously," Coen said. "Was proud of the way he competed. Made some plays for us on offense, and we got to continue to build off it."

2.Improvement made, more needed. A primary momentum shift Sunday again centered around penalties, with the Jaguars penalized six times for 66 yards and the penalties arguably leading to a 14-point swing. First, the Jaguars had a touchdown run by running back Bhayshul Tuten negated – this time by a second-quarter holding call on tight end Brenton Strange. Two plays later, quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw an end-zone interception. Pass interference on Hunter in the red zone with 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter led to a Texans touchdown. Hunter was hit for another penalty on the opening drive of the second half after the Jaguars forced the Texans into a fourth-and-1 punt. Hunter did not get off the field before the punt and the Jaguars were penalized for too many players on the field, with a Texans touchdown on the ensuing drive giving them a 24-14 lead. The Jaguars had been penalized 13 times in the previous two games. "I did think it was a cleaner game operationally, for sure," Coen said, "but some of the moments in which they occurred for sure kicked us in the butt today."

3. Toot toot. The Jaguars moved well early except for self-inflicted mistakes. Tuten gave them points and momentum with a 27-yard reception, taking a checkdown from Lawrence into the end-zone to tie the game 7-7 with 6:47 remaining in first half. Tuten made a beautiful move in space to break tackle attempts from safety Reed Blankenship and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, with Tuten aided by a well-timed block by wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. "A lot of awareness," Tuten said of Meyers' block. "Jakobi is great with that, blocking downfield … great teammate, and you saw it on that play. He is straining, effort, putting himself in the right position to not get a penalty called, and that is just a great job by him." Also aiding the drive: Wide receiver Parker Washington, who caught two passes for 46 yards.

4.Toot toot, too. The Jaguars took their first lead Sunday late in the first half, with Tuten again providing the boost. A wide receiver Josh Cameron 46-yard kickoff return gave the Jaguars first-and-10 at the Houston 48, and a 19-yard reception by Hunter gave them first-and-goal at the 4. Two plays later, Tuten caught his second touchdown of the game on a 2-yard reception for 14-10 Jaguars lead with :55 remaining in the half. It gave Tuten his first two-touchdown NFL game and continued to display him as one of the Jaguars' biggest offensive playmakers. Tuten finished Sunday with 39 yards rushing on 12 carries and caught four passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

5.Welcome to the NFL. Jaguars rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher's first NFL touchdown reception came in a big moment – and on a play to remember. Lawrence completed two passes for 50 yards to Meyers as the Jaguars drove, with an 11-yard reception by Tuten giving them first-and-goal at the 1. The Jaguars went with their heavy package and brought guard Wyatt Milum on the field as an extra blocker to indicate a run. Lawrence then faked a quarterback draw before lofting a pass to Boerkircher, who leapt and for a one-handed reception over defensive back M.J. Carter to make it 24-21 in the third quarter. "I could see it the whole way," Boerkircher said. "It was a good ball. He threw it high. We've been sitting on that for a few weeks."
