"The unveiling of the Jaguars' revamped defense is happening in small doses. Friday night marked the second step in what will be a gradual process as Jacksonville played its starters for an entire half. They showed a marked improvement from last season's defense in some areas, and the need for more in others."   The Times-Union

"The team owner also told The Indianapolis Star on Saturday evening that every option is in play if the May 23 surgery to repair a bulging disk in Manning&39;s neck forces him to miss his first career start. That includes signing a veteran as a short-term fix if coach Jim Caldwell, general manager Chris Polian and vice chairman Bill Polian determine Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky aren&39;t the answer."  Indianapolis Star

Stat of the day

NFL teams must reduce their rosters to a maximum of 80 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 30.

Schedule

After an off day, the Jaguars return to the Florida Blue Health & Wellness Practice Fields this morning.  Head coach Jack Del Rio will address the media this afternoon and coverage will be available on jaguars.com.

The last word

"You're never looking at one without an eye toward the other. You have to build your team around what you are capable of, what you are doing and with the guys you have, and play towards their strengths. You need to try and understand how teams are going to try to stop you from doing that. When you get into game planning, you get into more in-season type of thinking. For us right now, we are working our system and working our players. We are mindful of those things that you are talking about, but we are more focused on the system, the players and how the players work together and some things certain guys can do - the exposure. Obviously, there is learning involved. Some of these things that are a click off, but when you get it dialed in then that click can be the difference between a very successful play and a not so good play. We have to stay the course, continue to teach, continue to learn and grow as a football team."
