Top of the morning news for September 8, 2011

Maurice Jones-Drew touches on a variety of topics in a conference call with Titans reporters.

"The timing of the cutting, it's a business and we understand that," Jones-Drew said. "We can't go back and say, 'Change it.' It's not going to get changed. … I'm with Luke [McCown] now. We're all going to run with him. If Luke says run to the beach, I'm going to cut these interviews off and start running to the beach."  The Times-Union

"McCown didn&39;t want to speculate on what might have been. "If you speculate too much, you drive yourself insane," he said. "You really do. I kind of went through a period of that in 2007."  The Times-Union

"He has always been one of the best combinations of class and production the league has ever seen, but trust me on this: there will be Hall of Fame voters who won&39;t select him. Does he deserve it? Taylor is a curious case. He was productive, but missed a number of games due to injury. That will hurt him. But I&39;d probably still put him in."

Luke McCown spoke to a group of reporters on Wednesday.

First Coast Newscoverage of the Jaguars plans for 9/11 observance.

Jack Del Rio met with the media on Wednesday.

"Blaine Gabbert felt his pain. He took time to absorb the fallout, of seeing Garrard&39;s decade-long career come to an end in Jacksonville with his unexpected release on Tuesday. The first-round draft pick, still only 21-years-old, is fully aware that the day isn&39;t necessarily far off when that could be him."  The Times-Union

"The Jaguars held a players-only meeting Wednesday morning, a meeting in which Jaguars Pro Bowl tight end Marcedes Lewis said players discussed the release being 'the nature' of the NFL."

"As Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton sees it, the Jaguars' defense has a responsibility now."  The Times-Union

"Ultimately, it was my decision,&39;&39; Gene Smith said.  The Times-Union

Tania Ganguli of The Times-Union sat down with David Garrard yesterday for a lengthy conversation.  The Times-Union

Luke McCown says nothing changes for a role he has prepared for.

Scouting the opponent

Read what Mike Munchak had to say following Wednesday's practice in Tennessee.

"New starting quarterback in Tennessee. New starting quarterback in Jacksonville. New starting quarterback in Indianapolis. Will that mean a new finish in the AFC South?"  The Tennessean

"I think Jacksonville will know where he is on every play," Palmer said. "… The quality player that he is, he draws a lot of attention."  Nashville City Paper

"Jones-Drew has talked to people who worked out with Johnson during the NFL lockout and that contract holdout, so he knows the Titans running back is ready to go. He also knows how crucial Johnson is to the Tennessee Titans."  Associated Press

"We are going to show up, you can tell them that," Munchak said. "We are definitely coming. I know how this has been a great rivalry, anytime you play within the division it's a big deal. There is always a little more added to it, especially when it's early." The Tennessean

Chris Johnson's new contract calls for more time in Nashville in the offseason.

The respect for @Jones_Drew32 is mutual, he&39;s one of the best RB I&39;ve faced in my career. A very hard runner.

Munchak on #Jaguars:" I think they do a good job of pushing the pocket and making the quarterback uncomfortable." #Titans

@espn_afcsouth (Paul Kuharsky)

Asked Chris Johnson if he&39;s in football shape. He said nobody can get in football shape unless they&39;re playing football. #Jaguars

The last word

"I was a little taken back.  I had to process it for a couple minutes and then understand there's not a whole lot of time. It's not like we have two more weeks to really let it sink in.  You step in.  The people that I have been trained by and the other quarterbacks I have gotten to be around over the course of my career have all helped me prepare in a way that no matter what the situation I was prepared to start.  That's the mindset that I have had and about two seconds after I learned of this, that is the mindset that took hold."
