JACKSONVILLE – This is the time for improvement, and improvement is evident.
That is the focus for quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the offense as Jaguars 2026 Training Camp continues – and even with early-camp health issues on the offensive line, Lawrence and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski like a lot of what they see as the preseason approaches.
Not everything has been perfect early, but a lot has been good.
"We're getting better every day," Lawrence said.
Lawrence spoke following a hot, hour-and-45-minute practice at the MEC Sunday – a day on which he connected impressively with wide receiver Parker Washington and Brian Thomas Jr. Udinski also spoke to the media Sunday, saying he can see significant growth in players' overall grasp of the offense through 10 practices.
"It's encouraging to see," Udinski said.
Udinski said the benefit of accumulated reps throughout the offseason and training camp – and a second season for Lawrence and multiple players in Head Coach Liam Coen's scheme – has become increasingly evident.
"They're able to retain those things," Udinski said. "That's encouraging because they're studying, they're working at it, we're continuing to walk through those looks, talk about those looks, study those looks.
"Those are the things that separate us on critical downs when it's third down and there's crowd noise out there – being able to execute those adjustments, those small changes when it's under pressure is such a big deal for us moving into Year 2."
The Jaguars on Sunday again worked through absences on the offensive line. With Walker Little, Emmanuel Pregnon, Patrick Mekari and Chuma Edoga out of practice, second-year guard Wyatt Milum worked extensively at right tackle and second-year center Jonah Monheim worked extensively at guard.
"It will be beneficial," Udinski said. "We know you're not going to have the same five-starting offensive line for every single rep of every single game. If you do, you're incredibly fortunate, and that'd be extremely rare.
"We're fortunate. You see Jonah playing inside at center, at guard. You have guys playing left and right at the tackle position. You have tackles who can play guard, guards that can play tackle, guards that can play center. We've had tackles who have taken snaps at center.
"We're fortunate to have that flexibility. We just need to continue to build the communication and make sure that each iteration of the offensive line is as cohesive as that first unit. That's something we'll continue to work with probably throughout camp, even probably throughout the whole year.
"Whether we like it or not, we're going to continue to work different groupings, different guys working together."
Lawrence, who said Monheim and Milum have done "an awesome job" in recent days, had a strong practice Sunday with a long touchdown pass to Washington and multiple standout connections with Thomas. He has played in recent days with a sleeve on his right arm, something he said he uses early in camp to "get used to the volume."
"Obviously, throwing in the offseason, I prepare for camp," he said, "but it's always a little bit more because there's just less off days and more volume, especially the first couple weeks. So just a little soreness but not keeping me out of anything.
"Feel good. Feel like every day throwing it better and better, so yeah, just a little soreness."
Lawrence, who said he doesn't yet know if he will play in Saturday's preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans, called the performance for he and the offense thus far in camp "up and down."
"It has been camp," he said. "It has been competitive and I think we have done some great things. We have run the ball pretty well overall, I would say overall. We have taken some big strides there and I think in the passing game, we've had some good explosives – still can find more."
Lawrence on Sunday also lauded the Jaguars' defense thus far in camp for giving the offense "some really good looks."
"They have added some stuff since last year that they're playing coverage a little bit differently," he said. "Then they're showing some things and then they're bluffing out. They're challenging us, which is really good for us.
"Obviously, there are plays I want back, but I do know that we're getting better every day."
