First off the field: Day 2

A18I5293 (1)

JACKSONVILLE – The fans came back – for the first time in a long time.

That was notable about Day 2 of Jaguars 2021 Training Camp, but it wasn't the only notable part as the team held a second consecutive day of non-padded, non-contact work at the Dream Finders Homes Practice Complex.

The Jaguars opened '21 camp Wednesday, but Thursday was the first Jaguars training camp practice open to fans since 2019. Practices were closed in 2020 because of COVID-19.

"It's great," Jaguars safety Rayshawn Jenkins said. "Anytime the fans get to come out, I love it. That's part of the reason I play. I love making fans happy.

"Anytime we get fans out here, that's a great day."

The Jaguars worked for about two hours Thursday in temperatures that reached 86 degrees.

"This reminds me of my college days down at Miami," Jenkins said. "You've really got to take care of yourself, have a process, go home, eat right, sleep right and you should be OK."

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, had a second consecutive good day to start camp, completing multiple long passes to veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones – and showing good accuracy and velocity throughout practice.

The Jaguars' defensive backs continued to play off coverage in practice, often raising their hands as receivers caught passes. The Jaguars and Head Coach Urban Meyer had been fined $200,000 and $100,000, respectively, for eight plays during non-padded, non-contact offseason work on which defenders had defensed passes too aggressively.

Meyer said Wednesday that approach to practice will end when the team begins practicing in pads next Tuesday.

"It's tough, because you've got some tools [as a player], and you just go out and take a tool out," Jenkins said. "It's tough right now, but it helps us master that off man (coverage). I'm pretty sure when these pads get on, we'll be able to kind of chase a little bit and challenge these guys."

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell met with the media shortly after practice Thursday, as did running back James Robinson and Jenkins. Meyer is scheduled to meet with the media Saturday after Day 4 practice.

The Jaguars will practice again at 9:45 a.m. Friday and Saturday with a day off scheduled Sunday.

Here's a look at Thursday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

Lawrence was impressive throughout practice for a second consecutive day, with perhaps his most memorable play a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jones down the right sideline in a team drill late in practice. Lawrence also completed a long pass to Jones early in practice and threw a perfect pass to Jones late in practice that traveled 60 yards in the air – but that Jones barely let slip through his hands. Lawrence also had a pinpoint 15-yard pass to wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. that split the defense, and worked the ball efficiently to receivers on shorter passes – particularly to rookie running back wide receiver Travis Etienne Jr.
