Jaguars Tuesday: Strange Has His Day

JAGS TUES

JACKSONVILLE – He's one of many, and Brenton Strange likes that.

Strange, a fourth-year tight end, is one of the Jaguars' best offensive players. That he's one of their many capable, productive "skill" players is why every NFL Sunday is not like this past Sunday for Strange.

Strange had a career day Sunday, a sign of a deep room of pass-catchers that is emerging as a major reason for the Jaguars' 3-1 start.

"It just speaks to the playmakers that we have on this team and the coaches, how they call it up every week," Strange said Monday as the AFC South-leading Jaguars began looking head to a game against the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London Sunday.

Strange, a second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, turned in a career day in the Jaguars' Week 4 22-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday. He recording a career-best 95 receiving yards on seven receptions, leading the team in receiving after biding his time and being a team-first player.

"I was pleased," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said Monday of Strange's performance against the Bengals. "We definitely felt like with some of their injuries at the safety position, specifically, that we felt Brenton could take advantage of some of those matchups and made some really good plays and caught the ball strong, made some people miss."

Strange not only caught a lot of passes Sunday, he caught critical ones. His 23-and 14-yard first-quarter receptions set up an early field goal by kicker Cam Little, and his 16-yard reception in the fourth quarter set up a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Chris Rodriguez Jr.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence following the victory called Strange a "guy [who] just does a lot for our team."

"He can block in the run game, in the pass game, all that stuff," Lawrence said. "Then, obviously you see what he can do with the ball in his hands. He's a matchup. [Sunday] obviously was the most he has been involved this season, but that's our offense."

Strange also on Sunday converted several third-down receptions into first downs, including third-and-18 on the first scoring drive of the game.

"They look to exploit certain things as every team does," Strange said of the Bengals. "We all do a good job of communicating, putting in the work during the week and making it happen."

The Future is Now

Strange, who entered Sunday with seven receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown for the season, now has 14 receptions for 167 yards. The Jaguars have four receivers with more than 100 yards receiving and at least one touchdown through four games: Strange, wide receiver Parker Washington (16 receptions, 228 yards, two touchdowns), wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (13 receptions, 165 yards, two touchdowns) and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (nine receptions, 105 yards, one touchdown).

Rookie wide receiver Josh Cameron has five receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns for an offense that ranks ninth in the NFL in passing touchdowns through four games.

"I think when you go into a game any week, you have some teams that have tendencies and you kind of know what to expect, but I think it's a good thing, honestly," Strange said. "You have guys that can stretch the field, play in the mid, underneath range, and it's a good thing to have that problem.

"I would never say it's a bad thing."

Said Lawrence, "It's not everyone's day every Sunday. That's the hard part. There's only one football and our guys show that they're ready. The ball finds who's open and what the defense kind of dictates. I think that's a good thing about our guys, they're not selfish, they're pretty selfless with how they approach the game plan and the week.

"They know that the ball is going to find who's open, and I'm trying to do my best to get guys the ball and let them go play. I think guys have done a really good job with it."

NOTABLE

The Jaguars for a second consecutive season are strong forcing takeaways, with eight through the first month of the season including red-zone interceptions: Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun in Weeks 1 and 4, cornerback Jourdan Lewis in Week 2 and cornerback Travis Hunter in Week 3. "I think it's just our style of play and the way that Coach Camp (defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile] has us playing," Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson said. "We play very physical and the way that our coverage and our rush match up together, it forces the quarterbacks to make decisions that they don't want to make. If that's by speeding them up or getting pressure, however we do it. We have a lot of great ballplayers in the back end that attack the ball at a very high level."
