JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have a big week ahead, and they know what it takes to prepare.
The AFC South-leading Jaguars, winners of two consecutive games, now face a steeper challenge with an international flair: Back-to-back games in London, with the first coming Sunday against a perennial NFC power.
The Jaguars have been here before, and the challenge goes beyond physical.
"We have to have mental toughness to prepare ourselves throughout this week, and also have a professionalism to us that understands that this is a business trip," Coen said Wednesday as the AFC South-leading Jaguars (3-1) prepared to play the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
The Jaguars and Eagles are both familiar with London, with the Eagles beating the Jaguars 24-18 in a 2018 meeting at Wembley Stadium. The Jaguars are 7-7 in London, winning three of their last five games there.
"Obviously, it's kind of a little different out there, and like the stuff that we can do," cornerback Jarrian Jones said. "Just try to find your routine and try to stick with it."
Coen, speaking to the media Wednesday, emphasized focusing before the week begins to prepare for what the week will bring.
"Anytime you get outside of your normal rhythm, routine and environment, something is going to happen to you," Coen said. "Something will tweak. It's natural for every human being and so what I challenge them with is to identify what it is for you that can occur when you step out of your environment and routine, and to think about it and to get ahead of it."
The Jaguars for a third time in five seasons will play back-to-back games in London, playing the AFC South rival Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium in London on October 18. The Jaguars also played back-to-back London games in 2022 and 2023, finishing 3-1 in those games.
"It's a good time to chop it up, hang out, watch some film together," defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said. "We do a good job with that. We have a lot of leadership in the rooms and guys want to watch more tape and try to get used to communicating together, knowing what the game plan is.
"We have the time. We might as well use it."
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence called London games "a cool experience."
"Obviously, the travel can be a challenge, but as much as we've done it, we at least know what we're getting into and kind of the routine and how it goes and how to best take care of all the stuff so you're good to play Sunday," Lawrence said. "The time you get with your teammates, you're all hanging out, don't really have much else to do.
"It's good for the team. Obviously, it's a cool experience playing over there. It's always a good time."
This marks the first time in franchise history the Jaguars have started 3-1 in back-to-back seasons – and if that start has brought previously-coveted national recognition, Coen such things aren't a priority.
"It's so much more about us," Coen said. "We cannot look at anything outside for any sort of validation, if you will. At this point, we just know what it is. We still have not earned anything. We have not earned it.
"We have to go continue to take it with the way that we play. If people say, 'Man, that team plays hard, and they're violent, and they hit, and they run, and they tackle, and they do it …' that's great, that's good, but we're not looking outside for anything."
NOTABLE
The Jaguars placed second-year safety Caleb Ransaw on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning he will be sidelined for at least the next four games after sustaining a knee injury in the first quarter of a 22-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday. Rookie safety Jalen Huskey – a third-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft – is expected to be active for the first time this season with second-year safety Rayuan Lane III also expected to again play a key role. "Huskey, I think you look at the amount of reps that he got at the Carolina [Panthers] joint [practice during training camp], at the [New Orleans] Saints joint [practice], Tampa [Bay Buccaneers] joint [practice … he has been in competitive situations, played a ton throughout the preseason," Coen said. "He has been coming along." Added Coen of Huskey, "I like his play energy. He has had his hands on the ball in multiple of those joints and made some downhill, physical plays. We will have to look at it throughout the week and hopefully we lock him in to be able to give us communication, stability back there. I'm excited about him getting a potential op."
