Coen Talks Plans to Improve Offensive Line Ahead of Week 7: "We did not meet our standards…"

2025 TUES INSIDER THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – The time will come to move forward.

But as Patrick Mekari sees it, that time for the Jaguars' offensive line will come later this week. Until then, the idea will be to learn from a difficult experience.

And fast.

"We have to look at it, and take accountability for it," he said.

Mekari, the Jaguars' starting right guard, spoke to the media Monday in the wake of a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in which the Jaguars' offensive line struggled more than in the season's first five games.

"At the end of the day, we did not play well enough up front," Head Coach Liam Coen said, calling the Jaguars' next opponent – the Los Angeles Rams – "another challenge against a really good front."

The Jaguars, after allowing six sacks in the first five games, allowed seven sacks and 17 hits on the quarterback against Seattle. They also rushed for a season-low 59 yards on 19 carries.

"We knew that they had a good front for sure," Coen said of the Seahawks, "but we definitely did not play our best up front in terms of the level of physicality in the run game, but also obviously in the pass protection. We were just catching a little bit, not throwing our hands and playing stout in some of our pass protection.

"We were just giving up a little bit too much ground at times. It starts there (with the offensive line) and we did not meet our standards of operating up front."

Mekari called Sunday "a good learning experience."

"The tape's out there, so it's something that we've got to work on and get back to the fundamentals and be on top of our cues with that," he said. "You definitely flush it at some point. Definitely learn and grow from it and once those have been set in place, then I think you flush it and you move on.

"We have correct the stuff that needs to be corrected, practice at it this week, and then not make the same mistakes."

Coen called Sunday a "dirty-pocket day."

"That was the reality, and we've protected at a really high level up until this past Sunday," he said.

Coen on Monday discussed practicing more extensively in pads this week after working lighter last week during a short preparation week following a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs the previous Monday.

"Those guys understand and they know that we didn't meet a standard, and we've got to get back to playing the game that we know how," Coen said. "We're trying to take care of them, especially with some of the short week that we had this past week, but we have to get back to playing physical and moving the line of scrimmage, especially in the run game."

Coen on Monday praised rookie center Jonah Monheim, who made his first career NFL start after starter Robert Hainsey was deactivated with a hamstring injury.

Monheim had played 17 snaps against the Chiefs.

"Jonah came in and actually played pretty well," Coen said. "People are going to say, 'Well, that was the one changeup,' but he played pretty well. And we need those other guys to continue to step up around him and play a little bit better."

NOTABLE

  • Tight end Brenton Strange is expected to return this season, Coen confirmed Monday. Strange started the first five games of the season before being placed on injured reserve last Tuesday, a day after he sustained an injury against the Chiefs. Coen on Monday called Strange's status "week to week," adding "hopefully, the [Week 8] bye gets us a little bit of a jump on that, so he doesn't miss as many games. We're hopeful that after that, but it's definitely up in the air. It could be longer than after the bye."

NOTABLE

  • Coen on Monday also said rookie offensive lineman Wyatt Milum continues to progress after a preseason knee injury. Milum, a third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, was active for the first time this season Sunday. "I think we'll be able to get him some more reps this week and see what that looks like," Coen said, adding that Milum could practice at guard or tackle depending on Hainsey's status. "I do think we can get him going a little bit this week during the week of practice, not just on the show team, get him some quality reps with the unit and see how he can help us going into this weekend. It was a bummer when he got banged up because he was playing at a high level and he was doing some really good things. We've got to get him going again, which I do think is kind of this week."
