Campservations, Day 14: "Coaches Got on Us…"

CAMPSERVATIONS 14

JACKSONVILLEJaguars 2026 Training Camp continued Monday.

It was the 14th day of the second training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a practice of about two hours mostly in pads at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, team reporter Kainani Stevens and correspondent John Shipley – will share an observation.

Here are Monday's "campservations:"

Oehser…

  • Day 14 was a day for pivoting, persevering and noticeable passion. The Jaguars, two days after a Preseason Week 1 victory over the New Orleans Saints, on Monday continued navigating injuries on the offensive line and at linebacker. Head Coach Liam Coen spoke after practice of adjusting because of depth – and because of the need to get significant work and conditioning in a joint practice against the Carolina Panthers in advance of a preseason game between the teams at EverBank Stadium Friday night. The injury situation overall isn't thought to likely affect the regular season, but having enough personnel at offensive line and linebacker is an issue this week. Whatever the personnel issues, this is an important week for the Jaguars with the regular-season opener now less than a month away. That urgency came Monday as practice became spirited with a lot of post-play emotion – and in-play intensity – particularly from the defense. Tuesday will be in lighter pads. The joint practice against the Panthers is Wednesday at the MEC. Circle that one. As training camp practices go, it should be intense.

Sexton…

  • If you attended practice last Thursday in New Orleans, you were not surprised by what you saw in Jacksonville on Monday. "Coaches got on us," wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter said. "We didn't play as hard as they thought we should have been playing. Our motto today was just go be aggressive. Do everything we're coaching you to do. Be rough, don't sugarcoat anything. Don't be buddy-buddy with the offense. Go out there and work. That's what we tried to do today." The message was sent in the meeting rooms and executed in practice, with a high sense of urgency – or at the very least, an improved level of intensity. Monday wasn't a perfect practice. The offense in particular didn't have a great showing, with too many passes dropped. That unit looked out of sync much of the session, though perhaps the defense had a good day all around. But it was a high-energy practice that reminded players of what Coen wants: Strong fundamentals and toughness.

Stevens…

  • Coen wants to see more from his guys this week, including in joint practice Wednesday, and said Monday he was leaning toward playing starters to start their second preseason game Friday. He said he simply needs to see more from the group to make sure they are ready for the season. Coen also confirmed that no starters will play in the final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Injuries continue as backup quarterback Nick Mullens was seen at practice but did not participate, and Chuma Edoga left the Saints game with a leg injury.

Shipley…

  • Monday's practice featured a lot of Hunter at cornerback – and, as usual, he did not disappoint. Hunter made one of the most impressive plays of practice with a diving pass-breakup against rookie receiver CJ Williams during team drills, and he also matched up well against veteran wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Jakobi Meyers. On one repetition against Thomas, with starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence attempting to hit Thomas on a vertical pass down the left side of the field, Hunter stacked and prevented Thomas from running by him. Very few cornerbacks can do that against a speedy wideout such as Thomas, but it looked natural for Hunter. The Jaguars' secondary has made some great strides this offseason, and Hunter's role at cornerback is a big reason. Also making plays for the Jaguars on Monday was cornerback Montaric Brown, who prevented a touchdown in 7-on-7 drills with a timely pass breakup.
