Lawrence on Progress in New Offensive System: "more and more comfortable …" | Wednesday Insider

2025 WED INSIDER THUMBNAIL

WATFORD, United Kingdom – Another step forward.

When it comes to quarterback Trevor Lawrence, that's what Head Coach Liam Coen called his most previous game – with the progress of the fifth-year veteran in his first season in a new offense a major Jaguars storyline as they approach midseason.

So far so good – with more come.

"I'm getting more and more comfortable in the system," Lawrence said.

Lawrence, playing in his third offensive system in five NFL seasons – and his fourth in six seasons dating to college – spoke to the media Wednesday after practice as the Jaguars (4-2) prepared to play the Los Angeles Rams (4-2) at Wembley Stadium in London. Coen spoke earlier in the day, saying of Lawrence:

"I do think there has been improvement in a lot of ways."

Lawrence, who missed seven games with injuries last season before finishing the season on injured reserve, spent much of the offseason focusing on footwork and other fundamentals necessary to excel in Coen's scheme. Coen joined the Jaguars in January after spending the 2024 season as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Lawrence underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last December 18, and said improvement has come in recent weeks "just getting back to the feel of the game."

"Obviously missed a lot of time last year and it has been a while since I've been out there full go," Lawrence said. "I feel like I'm getting more and more comfortable even just being in the pocket again and like moving around.

"I think the last couple weeks have been better examples of that."

Lawrence, who entered the season with 69 career touchdowns and 46 interceptions, threw 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. He has eight touchdowns and five interceptions this season.

"There are a lot of areas that still can improve a lot on," he said. "That's a good thing about our offense, specifically – is just we're still leaving a lot out there and we can score a lot more points and be a lot more productive. Some of the plays last week I need to clean up, some of the progression stuff."

Lawrence threw four interceptions and four touchdowns through the first three game of this season, and has thrown four interceptions with one interception in three games since. Included in the recent three-game run: A 31-28 Week 6 victory over the three-time defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs in which he threw for a touchdown and ran for two more.

"You look at his ability to still use his legs in some areas: I thought there was some really good moments of being able to play some things off schedule, make some plays," Coen said. "We have to continue to help him create one-on-one opportunities down the field to be able to push it down there.

"I do think there's been improvement. I think he has confidence right now. I do."

Lawrence's highest passer rating in Weeks 1-3 was 80.6. His lowest in three games since has been 92.7, and he completed 27 of 42 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a 20-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Sunday while being sacked a season-high seven times with 17 hits on the quarterback.

"Everyone wants to talk about getting sacked a lot, but I can help with that as far as getting the ball out and finding some guys underneath a little bit more," Lawrence said. "I have to help our offense out and stay on the field and keep those drives going by getting the ball out of my hands on some of those second-and-longs and finding completions.

"There are a lot of areas I can improve on, but I definitely think I'm trending the right direction and that's what's it's about. Just keep getting better every week and good things will happen."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen on his first London game as the Jaguars' head coach: "This organization has done this for a long time and there's a lot of pride in this trip for us. Our owner (Shad Khan) our ownership … it means a lot to him and how his presence is in this city as well. And so, if he has pride in it, we have pride in it as well. And I think our players and staff members that put this whole thing together take a lot of pride in what they're doing. And so, it's a great experience and opportunity for us."
