O-Zone Late Night, Week 9: Jaguars 30, Raiders 29

WK9 OZONE LN

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Jaguars won Sunday. Somehow. Some way.

That's all that's important in the immediate aftermath of a 30-29 overtime victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium – that instead of letting a possible victory slip away, they secured that victory. Somehow. Some way.

They did so with guts. And want-to. And with a gritty performance from quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who spent Saturday night and Sunday morning throwing up – and spent Sunday leading six consecutive scoring drives to snap a two-game losing streak.

Yes, this was ugly in a lot of ways. Yes, the Jaguars were in a very real sense thisclose to a very different post-game vibe. But so what? They're 5-3 and there's a lot of beauty in that.

Let's get to it …

Hello, O! The Cardiac Cats are back ! What a finish! Does this team frustrate you with the highs and lows?

The Jaguars' victory Sunday indeed represented another wild finish – just as multiple Jaguars victories this season have featured heart-stopping finishes. And the Jaguars were inconsistent on Sunday – just as they have been inconsistent through eight games. Does this frustrate me? No, because I expected this team to be inconsistent this season. The Jaguars are in their first season of a new regime. Lawrence is in his first season in a new offense. Highs and lows were to be expected. You don't usually become an elite franchise in the first season of a regime. You usually get there by going through what the Jaguars are going through this season. Nine games remain in that regular season. Hang on.

Ain't nothing LITTLE about that leg!!! Cam is so back!!!

Kicker Cam Little set an NFL record with a 68-yard field goal at the end of the first half Sunday, a play that gave the Jaguars needed momentum after a frustrating first half. It was a big moment for Little, who had missed a 50-yard field goal in each of the last two games. He talked extensively afterward of the faith the team showed in him in recent weeks. That faith paid off in a big way. That was a neat moment on a weird, memorable day. Good for Little.

I don't know all the rules in the NFL, but I still thought you were allowed to tackle players in the open field. Can you explain the personal foul penalty on Miller?

You're referencing an unnecessary roughness penalty on linebacker Ventrell Miller Sunday, a play on which he tackled wide receiver Jakobi Meyers after a seven-yard gain. Miller picked Meyers up and wrestled him to the ground on the play. It was an interesting call that I'm not sure I would have made.

Mike from Lakeland, FL

So, when will the self-inflicted wounds stop being an issue? This is bad, real bad.

The Jaguars indeed were focused during the bye week on playing cleaner, particularly on avoiding avoidable penalties. The Jaguars were penalized seven times for 55 yards Sunday, and pre-snap penalties were a significant issue in the first half. It's important to note this cleaned up considerably in the second half, with two penalties for 20 yards. Not coincidentally, the Jaguars scored on their final six drives. Funny how that works.

JT from Palm Coast, FL

Every week it's the same thing. Bad quarterback decisions, bad penalties, bad drops and a defense that can't sack the quarterback. They say hate is love with no place to go. I hate the Jags. Hate, hate, hate!!!

This was sent in the first half. It's a thin line between love and hate. The Persuaders sang that. One fer the Persuaders, who may or may not have been Jaguars fans.

James from Socorro, NM

Just win, baby?

Damn right.

Haney from Little Elm, TX

Coming off of a loss and a buy week and surprise, surprise, three and out. It's gonna be a long game, Zone.

This was the much-ballyhooed, often-silly, sometimes-irritating First Email of The Game. The Jaguars indeed were coming off a buy week – a.k.a., a bye week – and they didn't start well at all. NFL games last 60 minutes – or in Sunday's case, 69 minutes and 44 seconds.

Chris from Mandarin

Yes, they won, but my God the Jaguars suck.

The Jaguars are 5-3 at what is essentially the 2025 regular season's midway point.

Michael from Orange Park, FL

The Jaguars announced before the game that T-Law was sick. Sounds like a built-in excuse to me.

This wasn't the much-ballyhooed, often-silly, sometimes-irritating First Email of The Game. It was actually sent a bit before kickoff. The Jaguars announced that Lawrence was feeling ill and still planned to start because that's what they were supposed to do under NFL rules. There was no other motivation than that.

Andy from Alpharetta GA

What a difference a half makes. The offense finally stopped stopping themselves and I would make the argument Trevor carried the team in the second half. And I'm sure there will be those who are upset about only winning by one against a "bad" team. But it's so much better than losing by 1. It's gonna be a fun ride.

Buckle up.
