JACKSONVILLE – The path continues to clear for Aaron Colvin.
Colvin, a cornerback from Oklahoma, signed his rookie contract with the Jaguars Wednesday, becoming the third player in the team's 2014 draft class to do so.
"It feels great," Colvin said moments after signing. "I've been waiting my whole life for this moment. I finally signed my name on the dotted line and it feels great."
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. All rookie contracts aside from first-round selections are four-year deals.
But while it's common for rookies to be signing around the NFL this week, Wednesday for Colvin had the extra meaning not only of a dream coming true, but doing so at a place where he said he feels increasingly comfortable.
Colvin (6-feet-0, 186 pounds), the No. 114 overall selection in the draft, sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament during workouts for the Senior Bowl in January. He likely would have been a first-or-second round selection in the draft, instead slipping to the fourth round after the injury.
Colvin got to know the Jaguars' coaching staff during Senior Bowl week when the staff was coaching the South team, and Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley told Colvin at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis the following month the team planned to draft him despite the injury.
Colvin talked several times after the draft about how much that meant to him, and upon signing his contract Wednesday he said his comfort level with the Jaguars has grown in the week and a half since the draft.
"Going through the process, you really don't know what's going to happen," Colvin said. "That's the case for a bunch of players, especially me with this injury."
The Jaguars have said Colvin may start training camp and the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List, which could mean missing the first six games of the season, but there is a belief that he could contribute in the second half of the season. The Jaguars also believe Colvin could develop into a starter opposite second-year veteran Dwayne Gratz.
"I talk to (Jaguars General Manager) Mr. (David) Caldwell and (Head) Coach (Gus) Bradley all the time about it," he said. "You can tell they just want me to get back to 110 percent so when I come back I'll be that effective player that they drafted."
Colvin, a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as a senior, was a two-time All Big 12 selection while starting 23 games at corner in his final two collegiate seasons. He started 12 games at strong safety as a sophomore.
He started 36 games in college, registering 234 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, five interceptions a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries with 23 passes defensed.
The signing leaves six Jaguars rookies unsigned: first-round quarterback Blake Bortles (Central Florida), second-round wide receiver Marqise Lee (Southern California), second-round wide receiver Allen Robinson (Penn State), third-round guard Brandon Linder (Miami), fifth-round linebacker Telvin Smith (Florida State) and fifth-round defensive end Chris Smith (Arkansas).
The Jaguars signed sixth-round center Luke Bowanko (Virginia) Monday and seventh-round running back Storm Johnson (Central Florida) Tuesday.
