Lawrence "Playing at a High Level Right Now…" | Game That Was Jaguars' Week 15 Win vs. Jets

WK15 GTW

JACKSONVILLE – He started hot and finished that way, too.

From start to finish – and pretty much all points in between – Sunday was Trevor Lawrence's day, with the Jaguars' fifth-year quarterback turning in perhaps his best performance to date as he continues one of the best stretches of his career.

"I feel great, feel confident," Lawrence said following the Jaguars’ 48-20 victory over the New York Jets at EverBank Stadium Sunday, with Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen calling the game "one of his (Lawrence's) better performances that I've seen."

"He's playing at a high level right now," Coen said.

Here's what "high level" looked like for Lawrence Sunday:

  • A career-high 5 passing touchdowns.
  • One rushing touchdown.
  • A career-high passer rating, 138.7.

"He's just out there on fire," running back Travis Etienne Jr. said, with Lawrence saying following the game, "This is as confident as I've felt."

Etienne, Lawrence's NFL teammate since the Jaguars selected both players in Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft and teammates at Clemson University before that, called Lawrence "locked in."

"I don't think I've ever seen Trev like this," Etienne said.

Lawrence on Sunday completed 20 of 32 passes for a season-high 330 yards and 5 touchdowns with 0 interceptions. He also rushed for a 15-yard first-quarter touchdown, throwing 3 touchdown passes to Etienne, 1 to running back Bhayshul Tuten and 1 to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

"For sure, he feels super confident," Thomas said, with wide receiver Jakobi Meyers adding of Lawrence, "It all starts with him, and he's doing a great job, in my opinion."

"Up or down, we're going to rock with him regardless," Meyers said. "Wherever he goes, we're going. We know what he brings to the table. It surprises everybody else, but I think it's kind of expected at this point. We know he's a talented player. And then mentally, he's just holding us all accountable.

"He does his job as a quarterback. He's just great for this team."

Lawrence, after throwing 10 touchdowns with 7 interceptions in the first 9 games this season, has thrown 13 touchdowns with 4 interceptions during the Jaguars' current 5-game winning streak. He has 9 touchdowns with no interceptions since throwing 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in a Week 12 overtime victory at Arizona.

"You could feel it throughout the weeks, the last few weeks especially, that he's continuously gaining more and more confidence, continuity and chemistry with the guys that he's playing with," Coen said.

Coen called Lawrence's recent improvement a "combination" of factors, including Lawrence settling into the "pre-snap" operation in his first season in Coen's scheme.

"That has 'chilled out' for them a little bit in terms of we're able to run more of the same but just out of different looks, so time on task, repetition, carrying plays over from week-to-week that maybe have worked that we just want to dress up," Coen said. "That really has helped and allowed them to just go play.

"We have seen over the last few weeks that we like throwing the football. Him throwing the football is a good thing right now to those guys and we're protecting at a high level. He trusts the group in front of him protecting and trusting the guys out in the perimeter to go make plays when the ball's in the air.

"It's probably a combination of those things that sometimes it just takes a little time."

Etienne when discussing Lawrence on Sunday also repeatedly mentioned the confidence with which his longtime teammates increasingly is playing.

"Trevor just continues to grow, continues to get better – just the confidence, the swagger he's playing with," Etienne said. "He's commanding the field. He's commanding the offense. As long as he keeps doing that, the sky's the limit for us."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen: "It's just fun to be able to keep coaching. Yes, we've won these last 'X' amount of games and executed at a high level, but when you continue to elevate or raise the standard of performance, of practice, of preparation
that's what I think is fun about this group. They don't want to just say, 'Man, that was a good a good win; we can kind of hang back and not go to work this week.' They want to continue and to be intentional about their efforts, about taking care of their bodies and doing it together. This is a group that cares about each other. We all do, I think – coaches and players alike."

QUOTABLE

  • Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker: "It's a lot of fun. You look around and everybody's aways flying around, smiling. That's one of the things you really want to see amongst players on the field, having fun. You're in your natural habitat, just out there playing ball and having fun like we're little kids."
