JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2026 Training Camp began Wednesday.

It was the first day of the second training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a ninety-minute session in helmets at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick, team reporter Kainani Stevens and correspondent John Shipley – will share an observation.

Oehser…

• Wednesday had the expected first-day-of-camp feel, with excitement and energy clear throughout a 90-minute, unpadded session. Head Coach Liam Coen and quarterback Trevor Lawrence discussed the theme of not resting on the laurels of a 2025 AFC South Championship season, with Coen saying he told the team during a meeting Tuesday, "Let's go earn something." Wednesday's work featured heavy work on the run game, with that area expected to be an emphasis in training camp while Coen also noted that it will be difficult to fully evaluate that area – particularly free-agent running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. -- until "we play tackle football" later in training camp/preseason. Among Wednesday's standouts: Rookie wide receiver CJ Williams, who continued to consistently make plays after doing so throughout the offseason program. Wednesday's comparatively low-key feel figures to last through the weekend, with the first day of padded work scheduled Monday.

Sexton …

• I watched Day 1 with longtime Jaguars and New York Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram. I was eager to get his take on the running backs without Travis Etienne Jr. and his considerable production from last season. Ingram thinks the group could be better this season and referenced the 2007-2008 seasons, when – while with the Giants – he coached Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw as they filled the hole left by Tiki Barber's departure following the 2006 season. "The level of competition was off the charts with those guys," Ingram said of the Giants trio. "They never wanted to come off the field, they pushed each other and then went out and competed for every carry, for every yard." I'm excited to watch Jaguars running backs Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and LeQuint Allen Jr. this summer and see if they see the opportunity in front of them. They're all talented in different ways and will give the offense variety, but will they push each other and bring the best out in each other like those Giants running backs who replaced Barber and won two Super Bowls? It's going to be fun to watch.

Shadrick …

• The Jaguars started 2026 Training Camp Wednesday, with about an hour's worth of work on the field in front of fans. Wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter was back from his knee injury for the first time, working both sides of the ball in individual drills. Coen said after practice that they are being intentional about when and where Hunter gets reps - down to the specific play - and that the plan runs through training camp. There is no rulebook for this, and it really depends on what Hunter can handle and is always subject to change. A couple highlights from a lighter non-contact day: Safety Eric Murray with an interception along the sideline on a deep ball from Lawrence intended for wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. on the first play of 7-on-7 work; tight end Brenton Strange with a catch on a tipped ball from cornerback Montaric Brown; wide receiver Josh Cameron with a confident catch in traffic on a deep in-breaking route on a pass from quarterback Nick Mullens. On to Day Two Thursday, when the practice extends by a few minutes.

Stevens…

• The first day of training camp is often circled on the calendar – and after last season's success, this organization is focused on proving 2025 was no fluke. The Jaguars begin camp with all starters healthy besides left tackle Cole Van Lanen, who is on the Physically Unable to Perform list after offseason knee surgery. Most notably was the return of Hunter. The Jags remain focused on his duality as he split his time with offense and defense equally on his first day back Wednesday. Team play looked sloppy, as it often does to start camp, but bright spots on defense from Murray and Hunter showed the impressive athleticism of the defensive back group. Excited to see more from the rookie additions as camp continues and pads go on next week.

Shipley …

• The Jaguars' secondary earned a lot of praise from Coen and his coaching staff throughout the offseason program, and that strong play carried over to the first day of camp. Several Jaguars defensive backs made standout plays on Wednesday, starting with Murray. The leader of the Jaguars' safety room recorded the first takeaway of camp with a diving interception off Lawrence that was one of the day's most impressive plays, setting the tone for the defense's day. Also making big plays: Second-year cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, who followed a strong offseason program with two pass breakups Wednesday – including one on a deep ball to Hunter during team drills late in practice. Also getting their hands on footballs Wednesday: Hunter, Brown and second-year safety Caleb Ransaw. The defense came to play to kick off the first day of training camp, and it was certainly a team effort in doing so.
