Tuesday Insider: Lawrence "Able To Play Freely…"

TUES INSIDER

JACKSONVILLE – He's good and getting better. A lot better.

If there are many reasons that's true for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, perhaps the most notable truth has as much to do with his approach on the field as his skills on it.

Lawrence has worked for his current success, and he and the Jaguars are seeing the benefits.

"Definitely the most consistent I've played," he said.

Lawrence spoke to the media Monday, a day after the AFC South-leading Jaguars’ 42-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium – the same day they began preparing for Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens at MT&T Bank Stadium. Head Coach Liam Coen spoke after Lawrence, lauding the sixth-year veteran's off-field approach.

"He's able to go play freely on Sunday, a lot of it because of his preparation," Coen said.

Lawrence, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions against the Colts, has become increasingly efficient in his second season in Coen's offense – a scheme that emphasizes pre-snap reads and changing plays at the line.

"I've learned a lot from our staff," Lawrence said. "The staff has helped me a lot in that process of how you prepare, how you study the game plan, why we're doing certain things. I'm just really in tune to that, so it has helped me a lot pre-snap. It has helped me make better decisions."

Coen said Lawrence's intelligence has accelerated his development.

"He has such a feel for what we're doing, what we're trying to get accomplished – because of the work he puts in, but also because he is able to see it and visualize it throughout the course of the week," Coen said. "From the run game plan, the amount of checks and cans, the pass protection system … the entire thing is on his plate.

The Future is Now

By placing your 2028 season ticket deposit today, you'll secure priority access and move to the front of the line for seats in the new stadium.

"We wouldn't ask him to do those things if we didn't believe he was capable mentally. As you go, things get easier. Some parts of the game get easier that you start to anticipate and understand. When you truly understand the why behind run cans or pass protection, then you can start to see it faster on the grass, and you can see it maybe before it starts to develop and occur.

"He puts in a ton of time throughout the course of a week that is not just spent with us throughout the course of a workday. He's here well after we're done with him in the quarterback room, going over the plan, walking through, talking through."

Lawrence, after passing for 29 touchdowns with 12 interceptions last season, has 17 touchdown passes with four interceptions this season. He has thrown 32 touchdown passes with five interceptions in the Jaguars' last 13 regular season games.

"I've played good football throughout my career at different times," Lawrence said. "I think it's just a part of my growth and learning and growing. I think our guys are playing really good on the perimeter, up front. We're running the ball great. Our line's playing really well.

"There are a lot of factors into that, to be honest, but I do think I'm playing the most consistent I've played in my career, for sure."

NOTABLE

Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. caught a 12-yard touchdown pass Sunday, with Coen on Monday lauding Thomas' perseverance through recent drop issues. "He's a young dude, but he's very mature," Coen said. "He's not an immature guy who's emotional and gets too high and too low. I said last week that he was going to come out and make plays for us in this game. We all had belief that that was going to happen. We're going to continue to believe that. We're going to continue to work with him and continue to get the most out of every player. I've been impressed with the way he is able to block out the noise and continue to be integrated with everybody. I was very happy for him to be able to make that play."

NOTABLE

The Jaguars have won their last seven regular-season games at EverBank Stadium, with all seven victories by at least 17 points. Lawrence has left all seven games in the fourth quarter, with the Jaguars' margin of victory in those games 38.7-10.7. "You are just a little more comfortable at home," Lawrence said. "You're in your bubble. You're in your environment. You're staying put. You obviously want to play good at home. You want to use that as an advantage, and we have used that and you have to be able to play great on the road, too. I remember a time where we weren't the best team playing at home, it's fun to be on the other side where we do feel like we have an advantage, and we feel like we come out hot when we play at home. The fans are a big part of that as well."
