JACKSONVILLE – There is a lot to learn, but also a lot to like.
For Quinn Ewers, the past week brought plenty of change: A new offensive system to master, and a new coaching staff and locker room to get to know. The Jaguars' second-year quarterback has embraced it all, saying last Saturday's trade from the Miami Dolphins has brought him some "exciting times."
"I'm just excited to be here and just trying to be a sponge and learn as much as I can in such a short amount of time," Ewers said after practice Wednesday at the Miller Electric Center as the Jaguars prepared for Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Stadium on September 13.
"Excited for the adventure."
The Jaguars traded a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Dolphins for Ewers, with Head Coach Liam Coen on Wednesday saying the goal was to "continue to create competition in the room." Ewers made the 53-man roster a day later, though his precise role behind starter Trevor Lawrence remains unknown.
Until that time, Ewers will be going through a crash course of the Jaguars' offense – with some help from Coen, Lawrence and Nick Mullens. Lawrence and Mullens, Lawrence's backup last season who is now on the practice squad, each have spent the last two offseaons in Coen's offensive system.
"It definitely helps," Ewers said of the veteran presence of Lawrence and Mullens. "Those guys have been in this offense for the past two years now. They've been through two camps now with this offense, and with their overall knowledge of the game, I can go to them and ask questions.
"They've been great when I've done so."
Ewers, a seventh-round selection by the Dolphins in the 2025 NFL Draft from the University of Texas, started three games for Miami last season. He completed 55 of 83 passes for 662 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie.
"He has some arm talent," Coen said Wednesday. "I thought watching some of the stuff he did last year, when he got some ops [opportunities] to go play, I thought he showed some signs of being able to spread the ball around to different spots on the field.
"I liked him coming out of Texas. I think Sark (Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian) does a really good job with quarterbacks and he's a young player that you can kind of pour into and see what that looks like as we can go."
Playing for Coen has been positive for quarterbacks such as Lawrence and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, and Ewers said he has an idea why after working with Coen less than week.
"You've seen some of the stuff that's gone viral or whatever, but he's just like that in person," Ewers said. "He's just a super-energetic guy, fun-to-be-around kind of guy, and it has been fun so far. I'm excited."
NOTABLE
The Jaguars shuffled the offensive line during 2026 Training Camp, with one result being that Anton Harrison – the team's starting right tackle from 2022-2024 – is now starting at left tackle. Another result is that Cole Van Lanen, who finished last season starting at left tackle, is expected to start at right tackle when he returns to the lineup after spending much of on the Physically Unable to Perform list after offseason knee surgery. "He is naturally someone who fits the bill for the left tackle spot, and I think he would tell you that as well," Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone of Harrison said when speaking to the media Tuesday. "It's where he is most comfortable naturally. I don't think anybody would say that they're concerned or have some sense of questioning whether he can perform at a high level there or any different than he did at right tackle." Gladstone said Van Lanen "says something really similar, 'Look, I can do either. Naturally, I feel best suited at right tackle.' From Cole's perspective, he can play any position across the offensive line regardless of what side it's on. I think it's certainly a new take, but one that we feel really strongly about heading into this season." Rookie Emmanuel Pregnon is expected to start at left guard, with last year's starting left guard – Ezra Cleveland – now starting at right guard and veteran Robert Hainsey starting at center for a second consecutive season.
