Friday Quick Hits: Johnson Ruled Out for Sunday

friday news

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars practiced at the Miller Electric Center Friday.

The AFC South-leading Jaguars (4-2) will play host to the Indianapolis Colts (2-5) in a key Week 8 AFC South game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville Sunday. Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen spoke to the media before practice Friday.

Here's a look at Friday around the Jaguars:

1.Safety Antonio Johnson will miss Sunday's game, with long snapper Ross Matiscik and cornerback Montaric Brown expected to play.

Johnson, a fourth-year veteran safety who has emerged as a key part of the Jaguars' defense and secondary, was ruled out on Friday with an ankle injury. The Jaguars released their third and final injury report of the week Friday afternoon.

Johnson sustained the injury in a Week 6 loss to the Houston Texans in London. He did not practice this week.

Matiscik and Brown were among seven Jaguars players listed without game status on Friday, meaning they are expected to be available Sunday. Matiscik missed the loss to the Texans with a shoulder injury and Brown missed that game with a hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers was listed as questionable on Friday with a hamstring injury.

Other Jaguars players listed without status Friday: Tight end Brenton Strange (eye), defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro (ankle), linebacker Jahlani Tavai (hamstring), running back LeQuint Allen Jr. (hamstring) and defensive end Josh Hines-Allen (ankle).

2.Coen is happy with how the Jaguars prepared this week.

"[Thursday] was our best football practice we've had in a long time all together," Coen said. "The energy, the individual periods, the execution, the competitiveness … it was just a good, sharp, clean practice. They handled it the right way. I was very pleased with [Thursday's] practice, specifically."

Sunday's game marks the Jaguars' first after a Week 7 bye week. The Jaguars won nine of 10 games following a Week 8 bye in Coen's first season as head coach last season, a season in which they entered the bye week with a 4-3 record off a loss to the Los Angeles Rams in London.

The Jaguars lost to the Texans in London entering this season's bye, and Coen on Friday said the Jaguars handled Wednesday and Thursday practices this week "specifically how you would expect" following the bye.

"We should have some fresher legs," Coen said. "We should be able to bop around a little bit more and have a little bit more physicality at practice and intentionality. And I think that those guys, the building handled it the right way this week."

3.Rain is possible Sunday, and the Jaguars spent the week preparing for it with assistants using buckets of water during practice to prepare the footballs during offensive drills.

"It was all Wednesday, all Thursday in all of our individual periods and all of our ball security periods, routes on air," Coen said. "It's annoying, because it's probably overkill. These guys are taking the ball, dumping it in a bucket and then taking it out, which isn't truly realistic because the refs take the ball and will try to help you out a little bit. But it does happen."

It rained the last time the Jaguars and Colts played at EverBank Stadium last December, when the Jaguars' offense ran into few issues.

"[Quarterback Trevor [Lawrence] threw it really good last time in the rain specifically," Coen said. "He never has really worried about it. He's a guy that does have big hands, and so I think that helps."

4.The Jaguars have run efficiently this season, though Coen has noted that they want more explosive plays from the ground game.

Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. trended well entering the bye week. He rushed six times for 35 yards and a touchdown in a Week 4 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 and 11 times for 55 yards in the loss to the Texans.

"I've challenged him a little bit over the last couple weeks, challenged him to continue to have that patience and be able to have that vision while also running as hard as he has," Coen said. "He has answered that in a lot of ways."

Rodriguez, who signed with the Jaguars as a restricted free agent this past offseason, has been a powerful and efficient playmaker during the first six weeks of the season.

"He has tried to intentional," Coen said. "Where he has ascended in a lot of ways that shows trust is in pass protection. We feel we can trust to put him in the football game in those settings, which usually helps earn trust and usually shows a player is starting to get it.

"He's starting to understand the bigger picture and starting to understand and take hold of the role, not just as, 'Oh, I'm a first and second-down runner.' We're going to need him this Sunday specifically, knowing what kind of game this is likely to be in a lot of ways."
