Tidbits on the 2013 schedule

* *

Heavy dose of AFC South in second half

In 2010 the NFL placed an emphasis on scheduling divisional games late in the season and this was accomplished again this season.  The Jaguars will play five of their six AFC South games in the second half of the season including three of the last four weeks. The only division game in the first eight weeks is at home against the Colts in week four on Sept. 29.  The only non-conference game for the club in the second half of the season is Nov. 17 against Arizona at EverBank Field.

On the road again

The Jaguars open the season with five of the first eight games away from EverBank Field including the four longest trips of the season for road games as they travel to Oakland (Sept. 15), Seattle (Sept. 22), St. Louis (Oct. 6) and Denver (Oct. 13).  It marks the first time in franchise history the club will open with four of their first six games on the road. The Jaguars travel to London to face San Francisco (Oct. 27) in week eight.

The Jaguars are scheduled to log 19,446 miles to their eight regular season road games, the most in franchise history, and 27,926 total miles including their trip to London (8,480 miles) to face the 9ers.  The Jaguars traveled 15,296 miles to their eight regular season road games in 2012, the fourth-most in team history.  Oakland traveled an NFL-high 28,692 miles to their eight road games in 2012.

Seven of the club's nine games away from EverBank Field are outside the Eastern Time Zone with trips to Denver (2,880), Oakland (4,700), St. Louis (1,506), Seattle (4,880), Houston (1,628), Tennessee (968) and London (8,480).  In 18 seasons, the Jaguars have had at least one game on the west coast in nine seasons (1996, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013).

Prime time game

The Jaguars host the Houston Texans on Thursday, December 5 in a game nationally televised on NFL Network.  The Jaguars have played on Thursday night on NFL Network in five of the last six seasons and own a 1-5 overall record on Thursday night with five of the games coming at EverBank Field.

The Jaguars have played in 32 nationally televised prime time games in their 18 seasons with at least one each season with 24 at home and eight on the road and own a 14-18 mark.   Of the 32 games, 15 were on Monday night, 11 on Sunday night and six on Thursday night. The Jaguars have appeared on the following networks: ESPN (18), ABC (8), NFL Network (4), TNT (1), NBC (1).

Preseason schedule notes

The first time the Jacksonville Jaguars will take the field for a game under new head coach Gus Bradley will be against the Miami Dolphins at EverBank Field in the team's preseason opener on Friday, August 9.  It marks the second straight year the Jaguars will open the preseason slate at home.

The Jaguars will play at the New York Jets (Aug. 17) and host the Philadelphia Eagles (Aug. 24) in the second and third weeks of the preseason before closing out on the road at the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, August 29. The Jaguars and Falcons have met in the preseason six of the last eight seasons.  The Jaguars have a 43-30 record in the preseason in their 18 seasons and they have posted a .500 record or better in 14 of the 18 preseasons.

Competitive schedule

The Jaguars will play teams in 2013 with a combined 129-125-2 record (.508 pct.) from last season, tied for the 12th-toughest schedule in the NFL.  The 2013 schedule for the Jaguars features five teams that qualified for the 2012 postseason – the Texans (Nov. 24, Dec. 5) and Colts twice (Sept. 29, Dec. 29) as well as the 49ers (Oct. 27), the Broncos (Oct. 13) and Seahawks (Sept. 22).

Jaguars to battle NFC West and AFC West

The Jaguars will face all four NFC West teams in 2013 for the third time (2005, 2009) in franchise history.  The club last faced the NFC West in 2009 and finished 1-3.  The Jaguars will host Arizona (Nov. 17) and San Francisco (London, Oct. 27) and travel to Seattle (Sept. 22) and St. Louis (Oct. 6).

The Jaguars will battle the four teams currently in the AFC West for the fourth time (2004, 2007, 2010).  The Jaguars have a 17-11 combined record against the four teams including a winning record against three of the four teams: Denver (5-3), Kansas City (6-3), Oakland (4-2) and San Diego (2-3).  All four games against the AFC West will come in the first seven weeks.

Home sweet home

The Jaguars will play at EverBank Field in three of the last four weeks for the fourth time in franchise history (1996, 1998, 2005).

Grass vs. turf in 2013

The Jaguars will play 14 of their 20 games, including the preseason, on grass.  Both preseason road games will be played on artificial turf, at the New York Jets and Atlanta, and during the regular season at Seattle (Sept. 22), Indianapolis (Sept. 29) St. Louis (Oct. 6) and Denver (Oct. 13) will be on turf.

Playing under a dome

The Jaguars will battle the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, October 6 at the Edward Jones Dome, their only regular season game in a domed stadium in 2013.

The Jaguars have played a game in a domed stadium 15 of the previous 18 seasons in team history.   The only seasons the team did not play in a domed stadium were 1997, 2009 and 2010.  Houston and Indianapolis have retractable roofs.

Clash of the Titans

The Jaguars will play their 37th and 38th games, the most against any NFL team, against the Tennessee Titans on the road on Sunday, November 10 and at EverBank Field on Sunday, December 22.  The Titans own a 21-16 edge in the series.  The teams have split the season series in six of the last seven seasons including the last four seasons.

Florida sunshine

The Jaguars have two games at EverBank Field in September when temperatures should be on the warm side with Kansas City (Sept. 8) and Indianapolis (Sept. 29).  The Jaguars have had five games with temperature at kickoff of 88 degrees or higher, with three at home and two on the road. The temperature at kickoff against Tennessee on Kickoff Weekend in 2011 was 87 degrees and 83 degrees in 2012 against Houston in their home opener.  The temperature at kickoff at EverBank Field in week five of the 2012 season against Chicago was 88 degrees.  Four of the club's eight home games in 2012 were played with temperatures at 80 degrees or higher.

Prelude to the postseason?

The Jaguars will conclude the regular season on the road for the seventh time in the last eight seasons and the 13th time overall as they visit Indianapolis on Sunday, December 29.  It marks the third time the Jaguars will face the Colts in the regular season finale (2002, 2011).

4:00 kickoffs

The Jaguars have three games that kick off at 4:05 p.m. Eastern time or later on a Sunday: Sept. 15 at Oakland; Sept. 22 at Seattle and a 4:05 p.m. game at Denver on Oct. 13.
