Camp Snapshot, Day 17: Sharpening the Edge

camp snap 17-v2

JACKSONVILLE – The preliminaries are nearly over.

The Jaguars are entering the late stages of their Week 1 preparation, with Sunday's Day 17 of 2026 Training Camp at the Miller Electric Center setting the tone for an important week for the entire roster.

"You have to maximize these opps," Head Coach Liam Coen said Sunday.

The Jaguars are scheduled to hold joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the MEC Tuesday and Wednesday, with the teams playing in the '26 preseason finale at EverBank Stadium Friday.  Coen on Sunday discussed the importance of this week for "just getting those guys a ton of reps."

"We won't in pads again until game week (the week of the regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns) after this week," he said, adding, "That's the reality of just how things fall and where we're at, and we ended up having one more padded day than last year's training camp."

The Jaguars, who lost to the Carolina Panthers in Preseason Week 2 at EverBank Field Friday, practiced in light pads Sunday with an emphasis on the passing game and details right as they enter the true final week of training camp.

Highlighting Sunday's practice were red-zone drills, with the No. 1 defense and No. 1 offense matching up against one another early and often in 7-on-7 and team drills.

Offensive highlights: Physical catches by tight end Nate Boerkircher and wide receiver Parker Washington. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis and linebacker Foyesade Oluokun recorded pass breakups in the red zone.

"It was good in terms of the energy and the guys having some competitiveness in the seven-on-seven in the red zone," Coen said. "It's always a little challenging, especially for the fronts, to really go when you're in spiders (light pads).

"Did we make that play? Did we not? Did we block that guy? Did we not? There's a little bit of gray when it comes to this setting, but I was definitely pleased with the way that they actually came out, approached it, had good energy, and had some intentionality."

The Jaguars will hold a walkthrough Monday before the joint practices the following two days.

"The continued continuity and chemistry is so important that every single time we step out here, there has to be real intentionality and not just, 'Okay, this is another training camp practice,''' Coen said. "That isn't it anymore, guys. We're building towards something, we're sharpening our edge towards something."

Here is a look at Sunday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

The best play of the day was clear: a big-man touchdown from veteran defensive tackle Matt Dickerson. The reliable interior lineman diagnosed a screen pass before leaping to snag it out of the air. He then took it the distance for a touchdown, eliciting the loudest reaction from the crowd of any play on Sunday. "It was great to see, Dickey to be able to go, athletically, make a freaking play," Coen said. "That's great for our team. It's great for our defense. Frustrating for the offense, frustrating for our screen game. But it is what it is, and I was excited, yes."

STANDING OUT

  • Washington, returning to practice after being out much of last week, had a productive day and connected with quarterback Trevor Lawrence on several targets.
  • Rookie guard Emmanuel Pregnon continued working with the starting offense on Sunday. He will have a lot of eyes this week because of the Buccaneers' scheme and their talent along the defensive line. "This will be a nice test this week," Coen said of Pregnon.
  • Rookie wide receivers Josh Cameron and CJ Williams were called upon quite a bit with veteran wide receiver Jakobi Meyers not practicing. Cameron hauled in a red-zone touchdown, while Williams saw a good number of targets from Lawrence in team drills.
  • Wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter worked solely on defense Sunday, recording a pass breakup that was nearly another impressive interception. He has been a magnet for the football in training camp.

INJURY WATCH

Washington returned to practice Sunday, with Meyers missing practice after having a brace on his hand during Friday's game against the Panthers. Also out of practice Sunday: Running back LeQuint Allen Jr., linebacker Jack Kiser, guard Patrick Mekari, offensive lineman Jimto Obidegwu, defensive tackle Albert Regis and offensive lineman Geron Christian. Offensive tackle Cole Van Lanen practiced in individual work after being moved from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the active roster last Thursday.
