JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser examines five big plays by the offense that helped define the Jaguars' 2025 AFC South Championship season.
1. "Trip Six." The play that will forever stand out in one of the most memorable victories in Jaguars history also was one of the most unlikely, wild plays in franchise history: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence's 1-yard, slip-twice, fall-once, break-a-tackle run with :23 remaining that gave the Jaguars a 31-28 victory over the three-time defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs at EverBank Stadium in Week 5. Lawrence on first-and-goal from the 1 had his foot stepped on by guard Patrick Mekari. He got up, broke a tackle by Chiefs defensive lineman Jerry Tillery and dove into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. "Panic, honestly," Lawrence said when asked what went through his mind when he fell. "I was trying to get up to get the ball out of my hands. We didn't have any timeouts. I was really going to stand up and launch it out of the back of the end zone. But I had a little bit of a lane, so I took it and scored from there. I couldn't stay down because we didn't have any timeouts." Lawrence earlier on the drive completed clutch passes of 33 yards to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and 13 yards to wide receiver Dyami Brown. "What an individual effort," Head Coach Liam Coen said of Lawrence's touchdown. "I can only imagine where he was at in that moment on the ground. To get up and shed some dude off … that's an unbelievable individual effort. At the end of the day, it's about winning and I'm proud of the toughness he showed at the end of that game."
2. Etienne all the way. The Jaguars leaned into two early-season themes – a strong running game and a lot of takeaways -- to take an early lead in a 26-21 Week 4 road victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The first key moment in this sequence came when Jaguars linebacker Dennis Gardeck stripped 49ers tight end Luke Farrell after a 10-yard pass on the first play of the second quarter, with Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard recovering at the Jaguars 48. Running back Travis Etienne Jr. then turned a well-blocked sweep into a 48-yard touchdown on the ensuing play, giving the Jaguars a 7-3 lead with 14:41 remaining in the second quarter. "He's got a really good feel for what we're trying to do in the run game," Coen said of Etienne, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries against the 49ers. "Whether it's in the zone or in gap stuff, Travis just has a really good feel for what we're trying to do."
3. P-Dub … again. Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington repeatedly turned in big plays at big moments in 2025. Perhaps no big play by Washington was as big as one in the third quarter of a 34-20 Week 16 road victory over the Denver Broncos. The Jaguars, leading by a touchdown midway through the quarter, took possession at their 20 after a Denver punt, and drove 80 yards on four plays for a double-digit lead. Lawrence capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass – his third of the game – to Etienne Jr. for a 31-17 Jaguars lead with 3:56 remaining in the quarter. The key play came when Lawrence on third-and-3 from the Jaguars 27 threw to the right sideline for Washington, who broke a tackle and sprinted down the sideline for a 63-yard gain to the Broncos 10 one play before Etienne's touchdown. Washington caught six passes for 145 yards in the game, with 87 yards coming on two receptions on which he broke tackles and turned short passes into long gains. "It's awesome, just the way it opens up the offense for us," Lawrence said of Washington. "It's hard against a really good defense and a really good pass rush. The coverage is sticky and they do a good job. So when guys can take short passes for 20, 30, 40, 50 yards it just blows it open for us as an offense. Obviously, Parker had a great day. Not surprised. He has made some huge plays."
4. BTJ over the middle. Lawrence and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. turned in one of the big plays in the season in a crucial 17-10 Week 3 home victory over Jaguars' AFC South rival, the Houston Texans. This came with 2:00 remaining in the fourth quarter with the score tied 10-10. Lawrence on first-and-10 from the Jaguars 44 checked out of a run play because the Texans' defense was showing blitz with no safety help in the middle of the field, then stood in the pocket and hit Thomas crossing over the middle. Thomas, after struggling with drops earlier in the game, caught the pass on the run and turned the play into a 46-yard gain to the Texans 10. "A huge play and a big-time moment," Coen called it. Etienne Jr. rushed for the game-winning touchdown on the ensuing play. "Brian just did a great job of winning and making the play," Lawrence said. "That's what I told him on the sideline. 'Hey, stay in it, you're going to end up making the play to set this one up for us to go win it.' And it happened."
5. T-Law and P-Dub in the clutch. Lawrence and Washington's chemistry grew increasingly apparent as the season continued, and that chemistry began showing itself in a big way during a 27-24 Week 12 overtime road victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Their biggest play in this game came during a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Lawrence, who threw three interceptions and lost a fumble earlier in the game, drove the Jaguars 65 yards on six plays -- with Washington outfighting a defensive back for a nine-yard touchdown that capped the drive for a 24-21 lead with 3:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. "We had a man beater on, and he just kept playing," Lawrence said of Washington, who caught five passes for 71 yards against Arizona. "The guy actually undercut it and tried to make a good play on the ball, and Parker just kept fighting to kind of get back over top. I just put it kind of low in a way where he could go make a play, and he came up with it. He played awesome all day. Parker made some huge plays – a lot of guys on offense (did). Guys stepped up when we needed."
