JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

I like what I'm hearing from Coen about Trevor's development so far. It sounds like he has full control of the offense and the footwork has improved. However, we won't really know until the pads come on, and the bullets start flying. For a technical perspective, would changing the footwork and timing affect the accuracy of the throws? Again, I like what I'm hearing.
This has been a major Jaguars storyline throughout 2025 organized team activities, and I expect quarterback Trevor Lawrence's footwork/timing/accuracy to continue to be a major storyline into the '25 regular season. Lawrence indeed has worked throughout the offseason on these areas – and it must be noted when that is said that pretty much any quarterback who has played in a different system is going to work on footwork and timing when adapting to Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen's offense. The same is true of a quarterback from other systems adapting to Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay's offense or any other offense similar to that of Coen's and McVay's. The footwork and timing are intertwined, with Coen this week referring to it as a dance. The idea, in Coen's words, is to make the "gray" areas of quarterbacking as "black and white" as possible. Translation: Everything in this offense – the timing, the footwork – is designed to make decisions as easy as possible for the quarterback. And anything that helps the quarterback – timing, footwork, etc. – has a chance to improve accuracy. As for your last point, you and pretty much any other Jaguars fan absolutely should like what you're hearing on this front. Lawrence is the No. 1 story around this franchise. If he's adapting and developing in this system – and all indications are that's what's happening – there's no more important happening for the Jaguars.

How do you get into the stadium every day? There are always the videos when players are returning after summer break, waltzing through the front at the gate. Do you get the same treatment, except every single day since you never take a break? Is there a special gate for JO? Do you pack your lunch daily, or eat with the players? Very intrigued by your daily walk of life into the 'Bank.
I get into the 'Bank daily the same way I assume all my colleagues do. I park where the bosses tell me to park, walk the mile or so up Bay Street from just across from the site of the old Landing until security sees me, run the other direction around the Baseball Grounds, then sweatily enter my security code. When that for whatever reason doesn't work, I bang on the glass door while weeping – and sweating – until Shannon at the front desk pushes the door open. Once she confirms with Lamping that I am who say I am, I happily sit cross-legged on the bench outside the locked door outside my "special gate," fire up the 'ol typewriter and commence to getting stuff done. Sometimes in the mid-afternoon, Shannon will bring me a sandwich Trevor didn't finish. Those are the good days.

Do you remember the time you criticized the fans that claimed that our-then current general manager would be an obstacle to getting a new quality head coach? I'm not sure you remember, since you haven't once mentioned that – at least in this one, small instance – the fans were in fact right.
I don't remember criticizing fans in this instance – or in many others, for that matter. I do remember disagreeing. Is that the same thing now?

Yo, Grizz! As our beloved and be-grizzled conduit between the fan base and the team, you have a unique perspective on fan favorite players. Defensive end Dawuane Smoot's return reminds me of my fondness for defensive end Joel Smeenge and safety Andrew Wingard. Who would you say are the fan favorites over the years that stand out, even as supporting cast?
This might be a better question for fans to answer. I'm all ears.

A little over five years ago, Ngakoue demanded a trade before OTAs. Since then, he has been traded three times, cut twice, been on a practice squad and is still a free agent today. Could he be like that cute bartender that's still single, and when you ask the locals why they all choke on their drink laughing?
I can't speak to the life and love circumstances of the bartender. I can tell you that former Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue's career path was fairly predictable once he reached the stage of negotiating a second contract with the Jaguars. He saw himself as an elite pass rusher worthy of being paid in the top range of NFL players in that role. Teams, including the Jaguars, saw him as a very good pass rusher – but not a top all-around defensive end. It was the fact that he was very good and not great as a pass rusher – and not strong against the run – that caused the disconnect between Ngakoue and the Jaguars. It therefore wasn't surprising that he had short stints with teams after that. Teams are willing to pay short-term very good pass rush. They're less inclined to pay long-term money or keep the player long-term if it's just good pass rush and little else.

Sinner or the Spaniard?
I assume you're asking if Jannik Sinner or Italy or Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will win the French Open men's championship Sunday. Sinner from this view is playing ungodly well, so I'll lean toward him – though Alcaraz has a way of handing Sinner in big matches. The women's final is Saturday morning. It's Coco Gauff of the United States versus Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. I would love to see Gauff win. She has a chance. But if Sabalenka is on her game, her power will make it very tough on Gauff.

Fred Johnson over Walker Little. There, KOAF. I called it.
There's little doubt that Fred Johnson, who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, will compete in 2025 Training Camp for the starting left-tackle position with Walker Little – a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft. Little would seem to be penciled in as the starter. I wouldn't use pen.

Just curious. What would you do if it turned out that longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist and Northeast Florida cultural icon/thought leader Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette is secretly Gary from Saint Augustine? Increase your life insurance? Re-sign in shame? Flee the country.
What's "life insurance?"
Stan Smeenge from Krakow, Poland
JO- Can I get a shoutout for the most famous of talented Smeenge clan? Shirley you have heard of Yosh and Stan Smeenge the famous polka band leaders?
I'm absolutely here for a shoutout to Stan and Yosh. But it's Stan and Yosh Shmenge, not Smeenge. And they weren't from Poland. The leaders of the Happy Wanderers hailed from tiny Leutonia, which polka afficionados well know was totally devoid of trees and located on the dark side of the Balkans. Their career was particularly impressive considering they didn't have much growing up. Just the music of xylophonist Lionel Hampton – and cabbages.

Nobody can cover Brian Thomas Jr. in the NFL as it is right now why would any person think that Travis Hunter can cover him? He is good but c'mon. Go Jaguars!
When it comes to believing fully in Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and maybe not believing quiiiiite as much in Jaguars rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter – but CLEARLY still believing in Travis Hunter – Don remains "all in."

Anyone who wants to trade Travis Etienne Jr. has got to have a hole in the head. If you don't know you're going to find out that he is really really good! Bad year for everyone last year but don't get carried away! Go Jaguars!
When it comes to agreeing with the Jaguars and still believing in Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr., Don remains "all in."

Trevor Lawrence footwork has nothing to do with what his feet are doing. It's about his hips and shoulders getting the proper rotation to the target. My Oh My! Go Jaguars!
When it comes to not writing in for long enough that I got concerned and then returning with a three-email-in-one-day flurry – but maybe not quite getting the whole "Trevor-Lawrence-footwork" story – Don remains "all in."

Did former longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist and Northeast Florida cultural icon/thought leader Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette begin a second career as a rock musician? There was a guitar player here on sixth street laying it down so heavy that everyone started taking their clothes off.
Good eye.
