JACKSONVILLE – Montaric Brown's focus is clear: Perfection.
"I'm kind of trying to work on everything, he said.
For Brown, the Jaguars' veteran cornerback who earlier this offseason signed a contract extension to remain with the team for the foreseeable future, that has meant a broad focus while preparing for his fifth NFL season.
"I don't have one thing," he said recently during the Jaguars' offseason conditioning program. "Anything, and never being satisfied, and just working on off man, press man, tackling … everything."
Brown's development mindset is one reason he has climbed the depth chart year after year since being selected by the Jaguars in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. It repeatedly has shown in his play, and has impressed Jaguars coaches.
"He always has kind of played and practiced with confidence," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said during the offseason program. "There are areas in which he can continue to improve, but, look: We signed him to a deal, and he comes out and just is him.

"He has practiced the same way. He has approached the meetings and practice and games the same way since I've been here the whole time. He is consistent. He's a pro."
While Brown is now a veteran on his second contract, that doesn't mean he is done improving. The team has high expectations for him in that department, with Coen saying, "I think we will see another step from Buster this year in terms of confidence, especially in the red zone."
A big part of that improvement is stability. Brown learned three defensive systems in his first four NFL seasons, with the return of Defensive Coordinator Anthony Campanile marking the second time in his career he will play in the same system he played the previous year. The last time that happened: 2023, Brown's second NFL season.

Brown fit well into Campanile's scheme last season. He started 12 games and had a team-leading 12 passes defensed with two interceptions. He also added 47 tackles (39 solo), the most among Jaguars cornerbacks in 2025.
"It feels great just to have a system you have been in for a year and not restarting," Brown said. "We can kind of progress and take it up another step."
Brown is set to play a critical role for the Jaguars' defense once again after signing a three-year extension in March. He has gone from being the young gun in the cornerback room to one of its veteran leaders along with veteran cornerback Jourdan Lewis – a role he has been happy to embrace.
"It's kind of crazy," Brown said. "Time goes by fast, but you have to lead by example and just set the tone for those guys and let them know how it's done, and learn how to practice."
Brown has been a part of two playoff teams with the Jaguars, serving as a special teamer for most of the 2022 season before developing into a key piece of the defense for last year's AFC South championship team. He has seen the highs and the lows of the NFL during that time, and he knows what makes up winning teams.
To him, it is clear the 2026 Jaguars have what it takes to replicate their past success.
"We're not going to back down for anybody, no matter who it is," Brown said. "We are going to compete with anybody from start to finish. We got some dogs on the field, and man, I'm ready to see everybody play this year."
