Camp Wrap, Day 8: Thomas "Playing Confident Right Now…"

BTJ

JACKSONVILLEBrian Thomas Jr. is in a good place. A really good place.

What's significant as Jaguars 2026 Training Camp continues at the Miller Electric Center is how the third-year wide receiver and former Pro Bowl selection arrived at that place.

He worked to get there, and he's still working.

"My whole offseason was just about fixing the little things, being intentional about the little things I know I can clean up," he said.

Thomas, a first-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2024 NFL Draft, spoke Friday morning shortly after catching one of quarterback Trevor Lawrence's three touchdown passes in the Jaguars' annual mock game. Head Coach Liam Coen also spoke after practice, lauding – as he did throughout the offseason program – Thomas' approach in recent weeks and months.

"He's playing confident right now," Coen said.

Thomas, a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie in 2024, has been a major story of the Jaguars' offseason and into training camp. After playing through a hand injury much of last season and struggling at times with drops, he said this is "for sure" the best he has felt entering an NFL season.

"Mentally, I feel good," he said. "Body-wise, I feel good. I feel like we have a strong team and we're going to do big things."

One difference this training camp, Thomas said: Improved strength at the catch point, one of multiple areas of focus during what he called an "intentional" offseason.

"I had a hand injury in the first game last season, so that played a part," he said. "Just getting that healed up and doing little things to get my hands stronger – just catching the ball on the JUGS [machine] and being right up on it – doing a lot of different drills.

"I would say the main thing was focusing on the ball, locking in on the ball, seeing it all the way to the tuck … that all plays a big role in it."

Added Thomas, "The hand injury wasn't an excuse. Anytime the ball hits my hand, I expect to catch it."

Thomas, after setting franchise rookie records with 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie, caught 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns while playing through multiple issues last season.

"I knew what I signed up for," he said. "It comes with playing football. You have to be able to tune that stuff out and stay locked in. You're going to have good. You're going to have bad. You have to focus on the task at hand.

"I don't get into that too much. I have a job to do. I have to stay focused, stay locked in. That was the biggest thing for me."

Thomas has impressed throughout the offseason program and training camp, with Coen multiple times praising his increased chemistry with quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

"In the spring, very early on, you could sense that he had really looked at things in areas in which he thought he could improve upon," Coen said. "He was attacking those areas, and not just, like, 'Yeah, it'll fix, it'll come.'

"I thought he was extremely intentional about the things he wanted to improve on, and the connection and relationship with Trevor and the other receivers."

Thomas said his offseason approach was largely about "growing up."

"I was young," he said. "Everybody has to learn. You have to learn how to take care of your body – what works for you, what doesn't work for you. It's being intentional about it. Not doing it one time, but being intentional about it every day.

"You hear people say coming into the league, 'You have to have a routine,' but you don't actually know what a routine is until you're into it and doing it."

Added Thomas, "When you're super-intentional about little things, you definitely see the work paying off. I feel much stronger at the catchpoint. I'm able to go and do a lot more things. I really just feel stronger, in general.

"I knew I had to be super-intentional about everything I did, whether it's staying locked in on catching the ball, staying locked into the catch point, or just being in the best shape I could be."

That approach has produced a player who feels good entering his third NFL season – not only about himself, but about a balanced receiving corps that also includes Parker Washington, Travis Hunter, Jakobi Meyers, rookie Josh Cameron and rookie CJ Williams.

"Talking to Liam, talking to all the wide receivers, I feel super-confident in what we can do as a group," he said. "Whether it's wideouts, tight ends, quarterback … We're all coming together and I feel like we're all going to play a big role in how the offense goes.

"We have to stick together and keep pushing each other. It will take us far."
