Day After Week 9 Win Over Ravens: "You Can't Just Reach and Grab…"

DAY AFTER

JACKSONVILLE – They're working, talking and examining possibilities.

While that is true for the AFC South-leading Jaguars when it comes to potential trades in the coming few days, Head Coach Liam Coen on Friday afternoon made something equally clear:

Any such move must be considered carefully. Very carefully.

"You can't just reach and grab," Coen said.

Coen spoke to the media Friday afternoon, a day after the Jaguars’ 33-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. He discussed multiple topics, with the need to consider culture and chemistry as Tuesday's NFL trade deadline approaches chief among them.

"That's a lot of it," Coen said. "When you're going through potential options, you start with, 'Does this player make us better or not? Yes or no?' And then, 'Is it going to fit what we're going, how we operate, the locker room?' All that stuff is very important with it."

The Jaguars – winners of two consecutive games and four of their last five – in recent weeks also have sustained season-ending injuries to players such as left tackle Anton Harrison, nose tackle DaVon Hamilton and safety Eric Murray.

"There are definitely a lot of conversations that are being had at multiple different things," Coen said. "You have to look at it more so in an entirety than just in the interim. How does it affect things moving forward: [Salary] cap, future, other players, how we can re-sign – or not – other guys?

"There's so much that goes into time of the year."

The Jaguars (6-2) lead the AFC South by three-and-a-half games, and Coen said any move before Tuesday must be made within the framework – on and off the field – that has enabled them to win 19 of their last 25 regular-season games.

"It's very important, especially when you have a good thing kind of going, that you're very intentional with the background and making sure the player is in the head space to come in and fit what we're doing," Coen said. "It's definitely a balance.

The Future is Now

By placing your 2028 season ticket deposit today, you'll secure priority access and move to the front of the line for seats in the new stadium.

"You're saying, 'OK, does this player help get us to the next level? Does this player help us get to X, Y and Z?' You're playing pretty good football, doing some good things. You don't want to just shake it up to shake it up just to make a move. You want it to make sense."

Coen cited the Jaguars' midseason trade last season with the Las Vegas Raiders for wide receiver Jakobi Meyers as the right trade for the right sort of player at the right time.

"That was one of those that really just fit," Coen said. "You're always looking for that fit and it's so much about the person, the competitor, the football character. That is everything you look at when you're making these types of decisions."

Added, "[You also have to be] cognizant of the group you have in the locker room and making sure the guys all know in the building, 'Hey, we're trying to do all we can as an organization to make the best decisions for the group and for our team' because those guys are so important to what we're doing.

"It's a fine line. It's definitely a balancing act, for sure. Everything that comes across your desk, you have to make sure you're looking at it through that lens. At least we are."

NOTABLE

Tight end Nate Boerkircher turned in a key play for a third consecutive game Thursday, with Coen on Friday praising him as a player with "good football feel." Boerkircher, a second-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, has nine receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns this season. His 52-yard reception on Thursday's second play led to a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Bhayshul Tuten and a 7-0 lead the Jaguars never relinquished. "Football kind of makes sense to him that way," Coen said of Boerkircher's knack for getting open and being under control. "He is athletic enough to run down the field and do some of those things and adjust his body at the catch point. [Quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence] has confidence in him." Boerkircher caught his first career NFL touchdown – a one-handed, 1-yarder from Trevor Lawrence – in a loss to the Houston Texans in Week 6. He caught a 31-yard touchdown from Lawrence in a 42-7 Week 7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. "He is doing what we expected him to help us do," Coen said. "He is definitely hitting a little bit of a stride here."
