Liam Coen Talks Day After Week 5 Win Over Eagles: "No Flinch…"

DAY AFTER

WATFORD, United Kingdom – The evening was difficult in the best way possible.

Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen spoke to the media Monday, a day after one of the most dramatic victories of his coaching career – and of the Jaguars' 32-season history. But if Sunday afternoon was about glory, tension and the near-impossible, moving on from the moment was a bit tricky.

Well worth it, but tricky nonetheless.

"It's challenging to decompress for sure," he said.

Coen spoke via Zoom from The Grove – where the Jaguars are staying during their two-game stint in the United Kingdom. He and Jaguars players spoke extensively of the first of those two games, a 19-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London that featured three lead changes in the final 3:20 and two in the last eight seconds.

"No flinch comes to mind," Jaguars linebacker Dennis Gardeck said. "Whatever it takes to get the job done in that moment, it's fun to be a part of. It leads to a team win. It's fun to be a part of a team that's so connected in terms of the phases."

The Jaguars (4-1) with the victory increased their lead in the AFC South to two games over the Indianapolis Colts (2-3), 34-22 losers to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Indianapolis Sunday. The Houston Texans are 1-4 and the Tennessee Titans are 0-5, with the Jaguars scheduled to play the Texans at Wembley Stadium in London Sunday.

Kicker Cam Little's 57-yard field goal as time expired gave the Jaguars the victory Sunday and came one play after running back Ameer Abdullah returned a kickoff 53 yards to the Eagles 39. The return came after kicker Jake Elliott gave the Eagles the lead with :08 remaining.

Abdullah, speaking Monday, praised the blocking of players such as Gardeck and running back Chris Rodriguez, whose double-team block keyed the play.

"Their strain, it was incredible – for those guys to suck it up in the moment where we need it the most," Abdullah said. "That really set up the spacing and timing that we needed. That double team that was pretty much the nucleus of that play and they set the tone."

Wide receiver Parker Washington's touchdown reception from quarterback Trevor Lawrence gave the Jaguars a 16-14 lead. The Jaguars then held the Eagles on downs, but punted the ball back to the Eagles with 1:35 remaining. The Eagles drove 32 yards to set up Elliott's field goal.

"I don't think I slept all that well last night," Coen said. "It was a long bus ride back, so we were able to watch some of the tape, which was good to be able to knock some of that out so that when you do get back to the hotel and you have a little bit more clarity as to what occurred. A lot happened."

The Jaguars outgained the Eagles 408-232, with the Jaguars scoring no touchdowns on three possessions inside the Eagles' 20-yard line. They had possession twice at the Eagles 1-yard line – on the final possession of the first half and once late in the third quarter – and failed to score a touchdown on either possession.

"When you just boil it down to where we could have maybe made that game not where it ended up being was offensively in the red zone," Coen said. "Where we had been good was an area in which were not."

NOTABLE

With long snapper Ross Matiscik sustaining a shoulder injury Sunday that kept him out the final three-plus quarters, Coen on Monday said the Jaguars will sign a long snapper. He is expected to arrive in London and practice Wednesday, with nose tackle DaVon Hamilton snapping eight times for Matiscik – an All-Pro long snapper – against the Eagles. The Jaguars, after being the only NFL team to not attempt a fourth-down conversion in the first four games, converted two of four on Sunday. The failed attempts came inside the Eagles 5-yard line. "It was challenging in the moment, for sure," Coen said. "It affected some of the calls, like going for it on fourth downs instead of kicking field goals. We missed the extra point. It does affect a lot of things." Coen praised the field-goal operations team overall – particularly Hamilton and punter/holder Logan Cooke – saying that while the "op times" after Matiscik's injury weren't ideal, the job done under the circumstance was remarkable. "They definitely weren't what you're hunting up, but to get it done … Logan was fantastic," Coen said. "It was just chaos, for sure, and hopefully this week we'll be able to alleviate some of that. We'll get somebody in here to be able to come in and immediately get those op times better and get the operation cleaner."

NOTABLE

Jaguars left tackle Anton Harrison sustained a knee injury Sunday and did not return, with sixth-year veteran Walker Little finishing the game in his place. Harrison underwent an MRI Monday, with Coen saying a player likely will be elevated from the practice squad at the position this week if Harrison is unavailable Sunday. "I feel like we have pretty good depth, right now, so I think we'll be all right," Coen said.
