Getting to know Jennings

What are some of your hobbies?

I like to sit around my room playing my guitar. I've been playing for a year and a half now. I started out in college … every semester I picked up a new hobby. I like to play everything. I also like to sit around and write. I'm writing a book right now.

What is the book about?

Well, the title of it is The If in Life. It's a play on words, and it talks about that if, like if you make this or that in life. Everybody is a product of what they see, and it explains what I've seen through my 24 years.

What inspired you to write the book?

My brothers and I are very close, and I always picture a lot of ideas on how to view life. People always say, 'Hey man you should really start writing a book.' One day I said, 'You know, I'm going to start writing it. I don't know how I'm going do it, but I'm going to start writing it.'

How long have you been working on your book?

I've been writing it for three years. Sitting down and writing a book isn't my sole purpose, but whenever I get a chance, I sit down and write. I write about what things I've seen. I just look at someone and try to understand where they are coming from. It's funny, it's serious, and you'll have to check it out when it comes out.

What do you like to read?

I like to read inspirational things, just to see where people are coming from. I like helping people, and I like seeing people accomplishing things they want to."

Who is your idol?

There are a lot of people that fit into that category, but I really look up to my oldest brother. He's someone who's always trying to do the right thing, and he's a person that does the right things. He is a youth minister, and I admire how he goes about every situation in life."

What was your first job?

I worked at a McDonald's in the mall in Pittsburgh. I wanted to get my mom a nice gift before I went to college, so I got a job there and worked there for six months just to save enough money. I worked in construction for a little while."

Any funny memories from working in construction?

I worked for a guy named Mr. Poindexter, who's (former NFL player and current University of Virginia assistant coach) Anthony Poindexter's dad. He lived in my neighborhood, and we grew up together. I knocked on his dad's door and said, 'Hey Mr. Poindexter, I'm looking for a job and I was wondering if I could tag along.' Since we already knew each other well, he said, 'Sure, come along and I'll pay you.' (Mr. Poindexter) was just a beast and he'll make you feel pathetic, just the way he works and how strong he is. He used to spit out different lines to me all day, and once he told me, 'Son, you're a trip without the suitcase.'"

What is your worst habit?

I'm too hard on myself.

What song would you sing on American Idol?

I might sing a Frank Sinatra Christmas carol.

What are your pet peeves?

I don't like it when people don't try to understand other people, like when they are quick to judge other people. Other than that, I'm easy going – a laughing, smiling kind of guy. I was born backwards, upside down and smiling."

What do you want to do after your football career is over?

There is so much. I've got so many things written down in my room of all the crazy ideas I have. I'd really like to have a boarding school. I think boarding schools are great because you get to influence kids positively, and I want people to learn what I've learned. Everybody is a product of what they've seen and what they've learned. I'd also like to open up a bunch of cool little shops. I love smoothies, so I'd like to have a smoothie shop."

What animal best describes you?

I'm a Jaguar right now.

What is your favorite sports movie?

I'm gonna go with Rudy.
