TRAVIS HUNTER FINAL ANALYSIS AHEAD OF TC

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars experts – Frank Frangie, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – are breaking down the Jaguars as the 2025 NFL season approaches; today: a look at rookie WR/DB Travis Hunter entering the 2025 season

Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: I expect Hunter to be a very productive receiver, playing on most downs on offense and being one of the best young receivers in the league. My guess is you will see him on defense on get-off-the-field downs. Third down. Fourth down. Also in the red zone. Lots of offense and defense when they need him.

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: Hunter is fun. Watching Hunter play in a Jaguars uniform should be a lot of fun. I expect Hunter to be a big-play, game-changing player. I have less feel for what that means statistically and how the Jaguars will distribute the ball on offense, but I do think he will make a handful of "oh-wow" plays that should resonate with his teammates and help shift momentum in games. I think a fun number to follow for Hunter is the touchdown-plus-interception total. I think it's reasonable for him to have a combined eight touchdowns and interceptions for the Jaguars in his 2025 rookie season.

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: While quarterback Trevor Lawrence remains the Jaguars' most important storyline entering the '25 season, Hunter is unquestionably the team's most unique and intriguing preseason storyline. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hunter is expected to start at wide receiver early in the season and play extensively in packages at cornerback. What I expect to see initially from Hunter is a player adjusting to the NFL, and he must show he can handle what is a uniquely large mental and physical challenge. Yes, Hunter has played both offense and defense his entire career. But doing so against grown men in the NFL will be a different task than he faced on any other level. I don't necessarily expect Hunter to enter the season as a consistent front-line wide receiver. That will come in time. What I expect early in the season is a player that can strain defenses and create a momentum-changing play or two a game. Defensively, I expect a player that concerns quarterbacks when he's in the game and forces a few takeaways over the course of the season. Hunter has game-changing potential on both sides of the ball. If he indeed changes three or four games, that's a quality rookie season.

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: I expect we'll see flashes of brilliance mixed with rookie mistakes and the usual learning curve that comes from playing on Sundays. The word from Boulder, Colo., was that Hunter's supreme gifts allowed him to take it easier during the practice week than he will be able to do at this level. How often have we seen a rookie receiver or cornerback struggle with the transition – and now we're supposed to expect him to show well at both? I think he will be a tremendous – and two-way – contributor in time. But Sundays are different from Saturdays, and it is reasonable to pump the brakes and let the Heisman Trophy winner have some room to grow in his first NFL season.

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: I expect to see some rookie mistakes – a missed route here, a missed assignment on defense there. But I also expect to see a few things that we haven't seen too often in games. He has the ability to make the spectacular play that could help turn the tide. I think his love for the game will show when the lights are on.

Kainani Stevens, Jaguars Team Reporter

  • What I expect to see from rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter in 2025: Hunter has exceeded expectations at every level throughout his entire career, and he is going to attempt to do that now in the NFL. I think Hunter will be a primary target on offense and a welcome addition on defense when he is utilized. I think he may end up leading the team in receptions as he earns his keep in the slot.
