JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars held a 2026 Rookie Minicamp practice at the Miller Electric Center Saturday.
Three Jaguars media members – senior writer John Oehser, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter/producer Kainani Stevens – shared an observation following practice. Here they are:
Oehser: Head Coach Liam Coen following Saturday's 80-minute, unpadded practice: "Just trying to get to know him personally a little bit, what makes him tick, the learning curve, how he learns best … then ultimately when he gets on the grass, how he handles and takes coaching." Coen, in his second season as the Jaguars' head coach, was specifically discussing third-round rookie offensive linmenan Emmanuel Pregnon , but the words defined the entire weekend. Jaguars rookies arrived Thursday and will begin working with veterans Monday, with the days in between very much about acclimating the 28-player rookie class – 10 draft selections and 18 undrafted free agents – as quickly as possible so they can perform as efficiently as possible in a team setting moving forward. A few thoughts from Saturday: Second-round tight end absolutely Nate Boerkircher looks the part of a player who can play the multi-dimensional role the team envisions, and fifth-round tight end Tanner Koziol has the advertised size and catch radius that will give him a chance to be effective in professional football. Pregnon, projected by many analysts to be selected far earlier than Round 3, stood out physically and has the look of a dominating run blocker. Gleaning specifics from practice was expectedly tricky, with the day's work having more of an orientation feel as plays were about lining up and learning more than anything approaching real competition. This weekend is about acclimation and learning – and Saturday at the MEC reflected that.
Shadrick: The rookie minicamp was heavy on individual positional drills, with the 11-on-11 work limited to alignment and assignment - basically lining up correctly and hearing a cadence from a quarterback. Starting with the basics will help the rookies work in with the veterans when they continue Phase 2 offseason program workouts Monday. In a limited setting, a few things stood out: the two drafted tight ends, Boerkircher and Koziol looked fluid running routes. I'm excited to see Boerkircher in blocking action with pads on in training camp, and Koziol is all of 6-feet-7 and could be a red-zone mismatch. Defensive back Jalen Huskey should fit right into the mentality of the secondary, with his fearlessness in run support combined with his ball skills. He has the attitude to match it, though it could be some time before we see that come out on the field.
Stevens: Rookie minicamp went off without a hitch on Saturday. It's a watered-down version of the offseason program designed to get the newcomers acclimated to the NFL and that was the focus Saturday. While it can be hard to discern good from great in such a situation, it's clearly evident when things are "off." I didn't sense any of that on Saturday and several of the draft picks certainly look the part. Pregnon is every bit of his listed 314 pounds and Boerkircher will be using his 6-feet-5 frame to his advantage on offense. So far, so good with the rookies who fold in with the rest of the team on Monday.
