Jaguars Defense Dominates on Day 10 of Training Camp

Campservations Day 10

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2025 Training Camp continued Tuesday.

It was the 10th day of the first training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a two-hour, thirty-minute practice in helmets and pads at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Tuesday's "campservations:"

John Oehser, Jaguars Senior Writer…

  • This wasn't the sharpest, most-efficient offensive practice of 2025 Jaguars Training Camp, which wasn't a tragedy but also very much wasn't OK with those involved. The Jaguars returned to the MEC with a contact-heavy, padded practice that was heavy in the running game early and that featured rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter practicing on both sides of the ball for the first time this camp. The post-practice theme from Head Coach Liam Coen and quarterback Trevor Lawrence was this indeed was a bit sloppier than is ideal – with referees calling multiple penalties. Many of the penalties were motion- and formation-related, with the NFL altering rules in those areas and many teams – including the Jaguars – using training camp to adjust in that area. Coen also said the team could have run better Tuesday and that the offensive line had perhaps its worst camp practice to date. The offense and Lawrence for the most part had progressed in recent weeks, and Lawrence specifically on Tuesday said he likes his progress in this camp. Tuesday wasn't the best day, but it's not a trend and the Jaguars have two more padded practices before the 2025 preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday. Four more days until real (sort of) football at the 'Bank.

  • The offense was clearly out of sorts on Tuesday, and there were plenty of questions for the head coach and the quarterback after practice. This is a tough week on the practice field, with players wanting to focus on the Steelers on Saturday yet having to get through three camp practices. Also: With coaches hesitant to play too many players in the preseason, this week's three practices – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – are more important than Saturday. Players don't know how many snaps they're going to get Saturday and Coen on Tuesday said he has yet to decide how to handle the tenuous question of how much is enough and how much is too much in terms of preseason action. "That's really the ultimate debate, right?" Coen said. "I obviously came from being in [Los Angeles with the Rams], where your ones and twos (first- and second-team players) don't really play [in the preseason], so you're ultimately playing with a long of younger guys – whereas in Tampa (where Coen coached last season), we played a lot of guys [in the preseason] and got some quality work in. It's definitely a difficult decision that we've been wrestling back and forth with." This is why many teams hold joint practices before preseason games – so veteran players can get quality work and not have to too many preseason snaps. They're only getting one day of that this summer. That's two weeks from Thursday in Miami.

  • Coen and Lawrence said the offense had some issues during practice Tuesday, with penalties, miscommunication and missed assignments. The defense, though, had a big day – dominating the competitive offense-versus-defense period on third-and-short situations. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis had a diving interception off Lawrence, adding to a long list of plays made by the veteran cornerback in this camp. Hunter played both ways in practice again Tuesday, and we will see how the rest of the starters work the rest of this week before Coen makes decisions on who starts/plays in Saturday's Preseason Week 1 game against the Steelers.

  • The Jaguars' offense looked a bit sluggish Tuesday after a day off on Monday. Things looked disjointed for the offense at times during the teams period and the secondary took advantage. Lewis made a diving interception that was by far the highlight of the day. Hunter played both offense and defense during team drills, putting a white pinnie on over his teal jersey when subbing in at cornerback. Coen said after practice it was probably the worst performance thus far in camp from the offensive line. Regarding Saturday's preseason opener, Coen said he had yet to decide how much the starters will play. That's a decision the staff will make later on in the week, but it's safe to say we will see the rookies for certain.
