OTA Observations, Day 4: Strong Day for BTJ

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars held Day 4 of their 2026 organized team activities at the Miller Electric Center Monday.

Four Jaguars media members – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter/producer Kainani Stevens – shared an observation following practice. Here they are:

Oehser: Jaguars '26 continued Monday, with Day 4 again showing this to be an efficient – and veteran – team in its second offseason under Head Coach Liam Coen. The Jaguars focused on two-minute offense and defense Monday, as well as end-of-game situations, with Coen discussing the importance of these voluntary sessions to simulate in-game situations and stress players "above the neck" because stressing them physically is difficult in unpadded work. Most notable during Monday's two-hour session: The continued chemistry with quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Jaguars wide receivers, particularly Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington. Thomas caught multiple long passes from Lawrence Monday, including one for an early-practice touchdown – and he has emerged as perhaps the biggest storyline of Jaguars '26 OTAs. Washington continues the progress and development he showed last season, with second-year veteran wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter again huddling with the offense before most plays before stepping away as he continues returning from a knee injury that kept him out of the last 10 games of last regular season. Also worth noting: Passes defensed by cornerback Jabbar Muhammad and linebacker Jack Kiser, each of whom appeared to have strong practices.

Sexton: OTAs are as much a mental exercise as physical, and the level of communication among the players – and between coaches and players on the sideline – was pronounced Monday. This may have been in part because there were a lot of young guys in the mix with the second and third units during team drills, and those guys are trying to figure everything out. An OTA is about getting some good, non-contact work focused on speed and tempo. Coen and his staff aced the assignment Monday.

Shadrick: The Jaguars started week two of OTAs with a practice packed with situations such as a backed-up offense, and parts of a two-minute drill. Coen talked after practice of the importance of emphasizing in-game situations, even in a walkthrough tempo, to address some areas from last season that must improve. The practice included plenty of seven-on-seven work, with Lawrence connecting with Washington, Thomas and rookie tight end Tanner Koziol on consecutive snaps to begin the first seven-on-seven period. I'm curious also to see how the Jaguars' defensive end competition develops as the offseason continues. Danny Striggow and B.J. Green II, undrafted rookies last season, will be battling with rookie draft pick Wesley Williams and plenty of other undrafted rookies from this year to complete the rotation behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. Though it's important now, we won't see this develop until August or later.

Stevens: OTA No. 4 served as heavy coaching day with the team spread out across two practice fields at the MEC. Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile got hands on with the defensive backs and Coen spent much of practice working with the wide receivers. Thomas dazzled with a few deep catches and overall showed more confidence on the field than what we saw last offseason at this time. Thomas following practice said he feels healthy and pain-free for the first time in a while. The third-year wide receiver also said he took time this offseason to refocus and feels he's in a good place mentally as he prepares for the upcoming season. Thomas said his main focus right now is continuing to build chemistry with Lawrence and to continue to be the best teammate he can be going forward.
