OTAs 2026, Day 4: Depth, Strength and Focusing "Above the Neck…"

OTAs Day 4

JACKSONVILLE – They're stronger – and perhaps deeper, too.

It's about improvement around the Jaguars as May becomes June – and as organized team activities continued Monday, talk turned to depth and strength. Head Coach Liam Coen said he sees positive signs about the former.

Anthony Campanile said he absolutely sees the latter.

"I've been really impressed with that," Campanile said Monday.

Campanile, entering his second season as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator, spoke to the media Monday following a two-hour Day 4 OTA practice – with Coen and veteran defensive end Travon Walker also speaking. Coen discussed the importance of this "Phase 3" of the offseason, a phase that began last week and will run through June 15-19.

Voluntary OTAs continue this week, with a three-day mandatory minicamp June 9-11 followed by the final voluntary OTA week that marks the end of Phase 3. Minicamp and OTAs are the only time in the NFL offseason when teams can hold 11-on-11 and seven-on-seven work.

"A ton of situational work," Coen said. "We're trying to put these guys in situations to challenge them above the neck because so much of this time is not physically as challenging, maybe, as training camp or in-season is.

"Really trying to stress them above the neck, go through situations that we had come up over the season, what around the league came up that we know could come up and show up for us come this fall."

Coen said Monday's practice emphasized situations such as two-minute offense and defense, end of half, end of game and third down, with a focus on red-zone and "backed-up" situations in this past Friday's practice.

"Really, we're just trying to run ball plays, but also have an understanding of, 'Guys, what's the sticks?'" Coen said. "What's the understanding of the call that we're making in this situation so that they can truly start to know the why behind what we're trying to do in situations and not just go execute a call?"

Campanile on Monday lauded linebacker Ventrell Miller among other players, also noting that multiple players – including two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Josh Hines-Allen and nose tackle DaVon Hamilton – have added "really good weight" this offseason.

"Our strength program here, those guys are, honest to God, incredible," Campanile said. "What they did with some of these guys, their bodies from all the way from when we got here last year to where they're at now. Their just general strength overall, our strength as a team, I feel like has improved, so I think some of that you see with the guys is actually visible now."

Campanile noted the same trend with multiple defensive backs.

"You look at some of their pictures from early on last year to where they're at now, because it's a real strength program," Campanile said. "[Director of Strength and Conditioning] Eric [Ciano] pushes these guys, it is a grind.

"I've been really impressed with that, and that's kind of a credit to those guys in there."

Coen on Monday also discussed the Jaguars' roster depth entering his second season as head coach, calling it "a good problem."

"The best will rise and play," he said. "Having depth and competition at every position was something that we were trying to do with the draft. Ultimately you're seeing guys practice harder and play harder and compete harder."

The Jaguars this offseason focused on depth at multiple positions, with Coen on Monday noting a safety position at which the team selected Jalen Huskey in Round 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. Antonio Johnson, Eric Murray and Rayuan Lane III return at the position – and 2025 third-round selection Caleb Ransaw is participating in OTAs after missing his rookie season with a foot injury.

Coen called depth at that spot and other positions important not only on offense and defense, but on special teams.

"Ultimately your backups have to have special teams value," Coen said. "If they can only play defense or only do this one thing, it makes it a lot harder to get a hat on game day, unless you're just sacking the quarterback or making a million plays on Sundays.

"That was something we were trying to be intentional about as well throughout the draft. Hard to see how it's shaking up now, but pleased with the depth and competition that it has created."

  • Walker on being in Year 2 of Campanile's defensive system: "Very beneficial. It's going to be some kind of change up a little bit, but being able to hit the ground running, remembering some of the things that we did last year and just kind of taking what we did last year and building on it. Not saying doing exactly what we did last year, but taking it and advancing it to the next level. I feel like that kind of helps the team get to where we want to go a little bit faster than we did last year."
