QB Trevor Lawrence Focusing on Footwork, Eyes and Has Full Buy-In at Jaguars 2025 Training Camp

Day 1 Trevor Lawrence Article

JACKSONVILLE – This was a good day, with good feelings.

Trevor Lawrence on Wednesday morning spoke to the media following the first practice of his fifth NFL training camp. The Jaguars' starting quarterback spoke of a new season, a new head coach and a new offensive system – and perhaps most notably, of feeling good about it all.

"I have a lot of confidence and belief in what we're doing and that we're doing it the right way," Lawrence said following Day 1 2025 Training Camp practice at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars on Wednesday in first-year Head Coach Liam Coen's first training camp practiced worked in helmets, with NFL rules mandating four "ramp-up" practice days before Monday’s first padded practice.

But while unpadded, Wednesday's work was intense for Day 1 – with much of the day in 11-and-11 and seven-on-seven work and with Lawrence showing good timing with his wide receivers.

"I think today I thought he was pretty clean in a lot of ways," Coen said.

Lawrence, who missed seven games in 2025 with a shoulder injury and a concussion, said he is entering ’25 camp 100 percent after undergoing season-ending surgery in December on his left – non-throwing – shoulder

"I feel really good," he said "It's the best I felt in a long time physically. Yeah, it sucks not playing, not being on the field. That's what I love to do. I love to play. You put in all the work in the offseason and through camp then to have the season cut short isn't fun.

"It's given me a really great appreciation for the game and how much I love it and love being out here. Sometimes you take things for granted when you get to do it every day and you're healthy. When that's taken away for a little bit, you kind of reflect and take a step back. In some ways, it's been good for me.

"I never want to miss time, but it has been good for some perspective things with me and myself and how I view the game and moving forward how I want to prepare myself and how I want to play."

Lawrence while rehabilitating his shoulder participated essentially fully in the offseason program, emphasizing learning and homing the footwork necessary to excel in Coen's offense. Footwork is essential for timing and reading progressions in the scheme, with Coen on Wednesday praising Lawrence's progress in the area.

"I thought he had a good day; he's taken to it," Coen said.

Coen, too, said how Lawrence's uses his eyes also has been an emphasis.

"We want to get our feet to our target, but that doesn't mean your eyes have to be at your target," he said. "We can use our eyes as a weapon while keeping our feet clean. That's been something we've continued to work on. Your eyes have to be a weapon, and your feet have to be in rhythm.

"I think he's done a nice job progressing that so far."

Lawrence said quality use of eyes is about "not giving the defenses tip on anything of where I'm going with the ball and trying to use my eyes to move people or to open up certain windows."

"It's something that I've never really been taught necessarily, but to hear their perspective on certain plays and the emphasis on certain plays to use your eyes, especially to open windows, makes sense," he said. "Learning those little things that can help make the windows two yards bigger, that's a huge difference in this league. It has helped a lot."

And while Lawrence called Coen's offense the most difficult of the three NFL offenses in which he has played, he said he likes his progression as camp begins.

"Going through it now for the second time after OTAs, I feel so much more confident and comfortable in it," he said. "The things that I thought were difficult at first have become more second nature and aren't as big of a deal now. At first, it's like you're trying to just spit everything back out and then put it together at the end. Thankfully, we're past that and the guys are rolling and feel good about it now."

Added Lawrence, "I have a lot of confidence in what we're doing here and the system, the staff, the new players we brought in, the guys that have already been here, the culture, everything we're building here. I think that frees me up in a lot of ways and kind of allows me to say that and feel confident about it."

KEY STORYLINE

  • Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter worked strictly on offense in Wednesday's Day 1 practice, running five plays in seven-on-seven work and nine in 11-on-11 work. He caught three passes, with Coen saying after practice he will work one side or the other for the first six practices before beginning to "flip-flop" during practices. "Once we do that, that'll kind of become the norm and how we operate," Coen said, adding that the training-camp plan for Hunter is "mapped out" in advance. "Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, is accounted for to make sure that we maximize, his time, our time so we can ultimately get the best outcome." Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is expected to play extensively on both offensively and defensively from the start of his career.
