Travis Hunter Adjusting to the Dual Role Workload at 2025 Training Camp

TRAVIS HUNTER DAY 3 ARTICLE

JACKSONVILLE – He's working, smiling and feeling good.

The Travis Hunter Experience is taking hold around the Jaguars early in 2025 Training Camp. It's a unique experience in NFL circles, and absolutely a noteworthy one. And Hunter is making this much clear:

He's enjoying it, and he likes the direction.

"It has been great," he said.

Hunter, a rookie wide receiver/defensive back selected No. 2 overall by the Jaguars in the 2025 NFL Draft, is one of the NFL's biggest stories entering the '25 season. He spoke to the media for the first time in ’25 camp following Day 3's practice at the Miller Electric Center Friday, sharing thoughts on his practice approach as he prepares to become the first NFL player in nearly three decades to play an extensive offensive and defensive role.

If preparing for the role is tricky and taxing, Hunter doesn't indicate as much.

"He's pretty unfazed by some of this stuff," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Hunter, after practicing exclusively on offense in the first two practice days of '25 camp, worked exclusively on defense Friday. He participated in 23 plays Friday – 19 in 11-on-11 work and four in seven-on-seven work.

Friday's work is the latest step in a detailed practice and preparation plan for Hunter, with Coen saying earlier this week Hunter will work exclusively on offense or defense early in camp and likely begin "flip-flopping" in the same practice after about six days.

"It's just a blessing," Hunter said. "They actually trust me, they put a lot on my plate, but I just have to go out there and continue to attack the work that they give me. It's the same as everybody else, but I just have a little bit of extra work on my plate, and I just continue to switch between the meetings."

A priority in the Jaguars' plan has been to use Hunter's time efficiently. On days when he has worked "exclusively" with the offense in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 situations, he also worked individually with defensive coaches. And vice versa.

"It's probably harder logistically for us as coaches to navigate it and make sure that we're making use of all his time," Coen said. "I think it doesn't bother him as much. These next few days will be very important, though, because he was on defense today (Friday). He'll have an off day tomorrow (Saturday) making sure that he's ready to go for the next few days.

"He'll have to use this weekend off day tomorrow as well to make sure that he's studying on offensive stuff. He has been great in terms of his attitude and just kind of the way he approaches it."

Hunter called the Jaguars' approach "super-organized," with the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner saying the workload is similar to when he played both ways at the University of Colorado.

"Me and Coach (Coen) go over it pretty much every week, and they send me a picture, and I get a piece of paper to keep in my locker so I know exactly where I have to be and when I need to be there," he said.

Hunter, too, said he likes the Jaguars' early controlled approach because it's helping him get to the point where he's processing information quickly enough to play effectively.

"If the offense changes when I'm on defense, if the offense changes the script, I have to know what I'm doing right away," Hunter said. "On the offense, if we change the play, I have to know what I'm doing right away.

"I like that we're starting off slow, getting me adjusted, making sure I know where I need to be on one side of the ball each day, and then it all will come together."

NOTABLE

  • Coen on Friday praised third-year running back Tank Bigsby, who worked extensively with the first-team offense and who had a long run to start practice – and who also had a long gain on a screen pass. Bigsby, a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, rushed for 766 yards and seven touchdowns last season after rushing for 132 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie. "The last few days, he's just continuing to get used to the runs," Coen said. "There's mid zone, wide zone, gap. Just getting used to the flow of those runs. What's the intent of those runs? I thought he did a nice job over the last few days to kind of making good second level cuts and getting vertical. I've been pleased with him so far."

Red zone work, 7-on-7, and 1-on-1 drills were among the top practice highlights of the Jaguars third day of Training Camp. Which is your favorite photo?
