Coen on Game Planning Ahead of Week 4 at 49ers: "It's a lot of hard work…"

2025 FRI QHTHUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Friday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (2-1) will play the San Francisco 49ers (3-0) at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday in a 2025 Week 4 game. A look at Friday around the Jaguars – with Head Coach Liam Coen speaking to the media for the final time before Sunday:

The subject of signs came up Friday, with Coen mostly saying little on the subject.

"I'm not going to speak on that fully right now," he said.

The subject arose because 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh on Thursday during his weekly media availability said the following about the Jaguars: "They have a – legally – a really advanced signal-stealing-type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation. They do a great job of it. They formation you to just try to find any nugget they can. So we have to be great with our signals and we have to be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field."

Coen on Friday said the Jaguars "have a huge game for us coming up this weekend. We've got a great defense that we've got to go and attack and that's where our whole mindset and mentality is right now."

He added, "We're really trying to focus on a darn good defense that we have to go and try to go attack and offensively get better, about us getting better, putting it together for four quarters and trying to create some explosives in the pass game, some of those things that we're trying to get better at as an offense. So, that's where the focus is right now."

Coen on Friday also was asked if signals were a part of coaching.

"By formation, by game plan, by working really hard as a coaching staff throughout the week, trying to get indicators by your formation, motion, shift, pre-snap … those are the things that you're trying to do as a coach if you're trying to put your players in the best position to be successful, whether it's attacking man or zone coverage with your formations, motions and concepts," Coen said. "It's a lot of hard work that goes into game planning and trying to put your players in the best position to be successful."

The Jaguars on Friday issued their third and final injury report of the week, with wide receiver Dyami Brown practicing limited for a second consecutive day and listed as questionable entering the weekend. Brown sustained a shoulder injury in a 17-10 win over the Houston Texans at EverBank Stadium Sunday.

The following players were listed without status on Friday's injury report and are therefore expected to be available Sunday: Running back Bhayshul Tuten (shoulder), wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (wrist), left guard Ezra Cleveland (ankle) and guard Patrick Mekari (elbow).

Rookie reserve guard Wyatt Milum was ruled out with a knee injury.

Coen on Friday discussed continuing to find ways to get rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter more involved in the offense.

"We can continue to get the ball in his hands as much as it allows from a formation, motion, the concept, the coverage – sometimes dictates where the ball goes," he said.

Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, caught one pass against the Texans, turning a short pass into a 21-yard catch-and-run that produced a first down.

"Last week he definitely made a play with the ball in his hands," Coen said. "That's so much that's a part of this game, and it's not something you can necessarily always coach them to do. As we continue to go, his usage will continue to go."

Coen on Friday said he liked the Jaguars' approach this week following a physical victory over the Texans.

"We were a little kind of banged up early in the week," he said. "We tried to take care of these guys a little bit throughout the week, but man, they practiced hard again. They practiced their tail off. It was hot as heck out here, but they practiced hard. Excited about the opportunity, have a lot of confidence in these guys to go out and make plays on Sunday."

Coen added of the 49ers, "Their style of play is very similar to the group in Houston we just played. You know going into it before you even turn the tape on it's going to be a physical, violent football game. That has to be our mindset going into every week. But especially these games that you know what their intent is in all three phases, which is to play physical and violent and get after you."
