JACKSONVILLE – BTJ is moving forward, positively.
Brian Thomas Jr. spoke to the media Wednesday, with the second-year receiver discussing a difficult performance this past Sunday.
His focus: The future, and performing well in the coming weeks.
"It's the same as every week – you move on to the next week," Thomas said as the Jaguars (1-1) prepared to play the Houston Texans (0-2) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. "It's a whole new game coming up. We're moving on."
Thomas, a second-year veteran, struggled at times in a Week 2 road loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday – a performance that prompted what Head Coach Liam Coen called "good conversations" between Coen and Thomas this week.
"Just like anybody on this team, nobody was pleased with the outcome," Coen said. "We had some good conversations, really good conversations. Everybody's frustrated, but at the end of the day he has a great opportunity to bounce back as does the rest of our team and feel really confident about that."
Thomas, a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie, has 5 receptions for 60 yards in two games this season. He caught one pass for 11 yards in Week 1 victory over the Carolina Panthers while being targeted seven times before catching 4 passes for 49 yards on 12 targets against the Bengals.
"I wouldn't call it a slump," Thomas said. "I just have to go out and execute and make the plays. When my name is called, when my number is called, you have to go out and execute and make the plays.
"People look at it how they look at it. They have their own opinion. You look at it however you want. I know what I'm capable of. Everybody has their own opinion. It is what it is."
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, too, said Wednesday he wasn't "worried about BT at all."
"It's football," Lawrence said.
"It doesn't always go perfect. Obviously we would have loved to have started off hot in these first two games and our connection be ripping and me finding him everywhere and having a great year and all those things, but we're in Week 2, everybody.
"I think we can all just take a deep breath and give BT a little space. He's going to be just fine. It's just something we have to continue to work at. We're going to have a good plan for him each week to be involved.
"He's too good of a player to not have him involved and making those plays downfield we know he can make. We have all the confidence in him."
Thomas was listed on the Jaguars' injury report Wednesday with a wrist issue.
"That's not an excuse for dropping the ball or whatever," Thomas said. "You just have to go out there and make the plays."
Thomas had multiple key drops Sunday, including one on a fourth-and-5 play from the Bengals 7-yard line late in the fourth quarter that might have secured the victory. Thomas said teammates have been "super-supportive" in recent days.
"They're pushing me to be the best I can be," he said. "They know what I'm capable of and what we're capable of as a team, so they're pushing us to be the best we can be as a team."
Coen called Thomas' importance to the offense "huge."
"You have a very talented player that we want to continue to get the most out of," Coen said. "We want to put him in a position to continue to be successful and have his back."
NOTABLE
- The Texans not only won the last two AFC South titles, they beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville six of the last seven seasons. The Jaguars' last home victory in the series came in 2017, with the Texans also winning a Jaguars home game in London in 2019. "We've really tried not to look back much," Coen said.
"We're trying to really go forward. Each year is a new year. Each week is a new week. These guys are aware of what is at stake in terms of just the competitiveness between these two teams and that we haven't had a ton of success. But that's the past, and we're looking forward. These guys have the right mentality, the way they're approaching things, the way we competed in the first two games. The outcome last week wasn't what we were hoping for, but, these guys continue to play their tails off, and are starting to continue to do it physically. That's going to be this type of game."
