JACKSONVILLE – He fits perfectly, and that's good.
If Brenton Strange isn't the Jaguars' identity, he's certainly close – and the third-year tight end who embraces that role says the team is focused and motivated as a critical regular-season finale approaches.
The AFC South title is on the line Sunday, and Strange says it's OK to acknowledge it.
"We're a hungry team," he said.
Strange, the Jaguars' starting tight end who has emerged this season as one of the NFL's best players at his position, joined senior writer John Oehser for this 2025 Week 18 O-Zone Podcast. He discussed – among other topics – Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.
The Jaguars enter Sunday with a chance to clinch a second AFC South title in four seasons.
"We want to be champions of the division," Strange said. "That's what we work hard for. There's no reason to be shy about it. That's what we work hard for. That's why we come in here every single day and put our best foot forward.
"It's about preparation, leading up to the game and doing what we need to do and everything will take care of itself."
Strange, one of the NFL's best blocking tight ends, has caught 40 passes this season for a career-high 488 yards despite missing five games with a hip injury. His physicality in the running game, effectiveness in the passing game and overall toughness has been critical in a seven-game winning streak in which the Jaguars have scored at least 23 points in all games.
"I feel like my job on this team is to be a tone-setter," said Strange, a third-year veteran and a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2023 NFL Draft. "Whether that be in the run game or the pass game – whatever it is, I feel like with my physicality I have to come out every single week and set the tone myself and the guys around me.
"I pride myself on being a physical, versatile player. That's the best thing about being a tight end and I'm blessed to be a part of this organization and what we have going on."
Strange, too, discussed embracing Jaguars fans and the City of Jacksonville – and Jaguars fans and the City of Jacksonville embracing him.
"That's what it's all about, going out and just trying to make the city proud," he said. "I think Duval is toughness. Why not be a tough football team for a city that's super tough?"
