JACKSONVILLE – And so it began.
The Jaguars on Wednesday morning practiced at the Miller Electric Center, a 90-minute session in helmets and no pads that marked Day 1 of 2026 Training Camp. The day, in addition to featuring an early injury and the return of a high-profile player, brought the expected energy and optimism.
The long offseason is over. Football is here.
"It felt good to be back," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said.
Wednesday marked the first of four "acclimation" practices in five days as mandated by NFL rules. The first padded practice of '26 camp is scheduled for Monday, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence on Wednesday saying, "I like where our team's at."
"I'm excited – really excited – for this training camp," Lawrence said.
Notable on Wednesday: An injury sustained by second-year linebacker Jack Kiser on the fourth play of team drills. Coen said following practice there was "no update yet" on Kiser and that the 2025 fourth-round selection from Notre Dame likely will undergo a magnetic resonance image Wednesday night.
"We'll have a better idea," Coen said. "He wasn't, like, screaming or freaking out in pain. Very hopeful that it will be shorter than longer, but really don't know exactly what it is at this time."
Travis Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, worked at both cornerback and wide receiver Wednesday. He played both positions as a rookie last season and is expected to do again this season, with Wednesday marking his first participation in practice since he sustained a season-ending knee injury in a Week 9 practice last season.
"It was good," Coen said of Hunter's day Wednesday, adding that the team has planned Hunter's practice approach extensively entering camp.
Coen praised Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Pass Game Coordinator Shane Waldron, Assistant to the Head Coach Jay Kaiser and Director of Performance Science Chris Bach for their work planning Hunter's day-to-day, period-to-period schedule.
"We have been extremely intentional about it, so there are no hiccups, miscommunication and just everybody has confidence knowing exactly where he's at, what plays he is in on," Coen said. "Being intentional about getting him the exact reps that he really needs from a learning progression standpoint … it has been a lot."
Coen said Hunter has added 10 pounds of muscle in the offseason and has told coaches he "feels lighter."
"That's a good thing," Coen said. "I feel like he's confident in himself, in his physicality, right now. I think he's going to go into the season feeling more confident in what he's been able to put on his body, for armor purposes and physicality. He has to get in football shape, that's for sure. But it's exciting to see."
Here's a look at Wednesday's practice:
PLAY OF THE DAY
Rookie wide receiver CJ Williams has become a familiar face when it comes to highlight plays in practice, and he made the most impressive one on the first day of camp. Despite having linebacker Ventrell Miller attached at his hip in coverage, Williams made a sliding grab of a Nick Mullens pass that – until Williams secured it – looked like a clear win for Miller and the defense. Williams has become Mr. Reliable for each quarterback he has worked with, and Wednesday was no different.
STANDING OUT
- Veteran safety Eric Murray made a diving interception off a pass from Lawrence near the sideline for the defense's first takeaway of training camp, capping a strong day for the secondary.
- Defensive end Travon Walker and defensive tackle Arik Armstead each recorded would-be sacks in team drills, with Walker defeating a double-team to get to the quarterback.
- Tight end Brenton Strange brought in a difficult catch after it was tipped in the secondary, tracking it and plucking it from the air to get a big gain for the passing game.
QUOTABLE
Coen on Day 1: "It was a little sloppy in terms of drops and some inaccuracy, just not throwing and probably catching a ton with each other. I was pleased to see some plays being made on both sides. I wouldn't really love to walk out here today and it be one-sided. I'd prefer it, obviously, for the offense to have a lot of success, and I don't like to see the ball on the ground as much as it probably was today. I was pleased with some of the back and forth, and some of the hits in the run game as well."
INJURY WATCH
- Veteran running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., who sustained a foot injury early in the offseason program, participated in individual drills Wednesday. Cornerback Christian Braswell also participated in individual drills Wednesday. Left tackle Cole Van Lanen (knee) and offensive lineman Garrett DiGiorgio were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list to start camp.
