JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser examines the second quarter – Weeks 6-10 – of the Jaguars' 2025 AFC South Championship season:
Week 6: Seattle Seahawks 20, Jaguars 12
- Site: EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville
- What happened: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdowns and the Jaguars inched close late, but the Seahawks held on to win a game largely defined by Jaguars mistakes. Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold threw touchdowns to wide receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp to give the Seahawks a 20-6 lead entering the fourth quarter. Lawrence gave the Jaguars an early lead with a first-quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., then pulled them to within eight points with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Tim Patrick early in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars had three possessions in the fourth quarter trailing by eight points – their three series before Seattle's final drive – but produced just one first down on the three drives.
- Key play: The Seahawks clinched the victory by kneeling out the final 1:57 on their final drive, with tight end AJ Barner's 61-yard reception from Darnold giving them possession deep in Jaguars territory.
- Notable: The Jaguars were penalized 10 times for 76 yards and Lawrence was sacked seven times.
- Quoting Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen: "We will not beat quality teams like this if we continue to hurt ourselves. We continue to hurt ourselves and have these self-inflicted wounds. That ultimately is on me. It's an undisciplined operation at the moment. What's standing in our way? Right now, it's us."
- Quoting Lawrence: "It's on all of us. It's all of us taking accountability and fixing the things we can control. We have to look in the mirror and fix the problems that have been there all year."
- Tracking the South: Indianapolis Colts (5-1), Jaguars (4-2), Houston Texans (2-3), Tennessee Titans (1-5).
Week 7: Los Angeles Rams 35, Jaguars 7
- Site: Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom
- What happened: Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw five touchdown passes – three in the first half – for a Rams team that dominated from the start and pulled steadily away to hand the Jaguars their lone loss of the season by a score or more. This was the Jaguars' second consecutive loss, their lone losing streak of the season. Lawrence completed 23 of 48 passes for 296 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. The Rams scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives.
- Key play: This was too one-sided to note one key play, but the Jaguars drove past midfield on six consecutive possessions without scoring – and over the course of the second and third periods drove to at least the Rams 32 on four consecutive possessions without scoring.
- Notable: Lawrence's lone touchdown pass was a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter to rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter, a play that cut the Rams' lead to 28-7 and marked the first NFL touchdown for the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
- Quoting Coen: "Everything we said we did not want to occur did occur, and it starts with me. It's definitely frustrating. We have to self-scout in all three phases. We have to look at personnel in all three phases – how we're utilizing it, how we aren't utilizing it, where do we need to use guys more or use guys less. It's all going to get evaluated."
- Quoting Lawrence: "We just got beat today. We didn't play good enough. We have to get better, Obviously we haven't played our best football the last couple of weeks."
- Tracking the South: Indianapolis Colts (6-1), Jaguars (4-3), Houston Texans (2-4), Tennessee Titans (1-6).
Week 8: Bye
- Tracking the South: Indianapolis Colts (7-1), Jaguars (4-3), Houston Texans (3-4), Tennessee Titans (1-7).
Week 9: Jaguars 30, Las Vegas Raiders 29 (OT)
- Site: Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
- What happened: Lawrence played through illness, and the Jaguars played through key injuries and absences to win a back-and-forth game in overtime. Jaguars kicker Cam Little set an NFL record with a 68-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, also forcing overtime with a 48-yard field goal with :15 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lawrence and running back Bhayshul Tuten ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns and Lawrence's 1-yard run with 3:24 remaining in overtime gave the Jaguars a 30-23 lead.
- Key play: Jaguars nose tackle DaVon Hamilton batted down Raiders quarterback Geno Smith's two-point pass with :16 remaining in overtime to secure the victory. Smith threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game – his third to tight end Brock Bowers, this one for two yards – to make it 30-29 on the preceding play.
- Notable: Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen registered 1.5 sacks to tie former Jaguars defensive end Tony Brackens' franchise record of 55 career sacks.
- Quoting Lawrence: "I was like, 'It's going to have to be really bad to not play,' so I didn't really give myself that option. Thankfully I was feeling a little bit better by the time the game rolled around. It would have taken a lot to keep me out of it."
- Quoting Hines-Allen: "Every game, we go into every game trying to win, first and foremost. We all have to be on our Ps and Qs. Guys stepped up in a big way. Guys played a huge role."
- Tracking the South: Indianapolis Colts (7-2), Jaguars (5-3), Houston Texans (3-5), Tennessee Titans (1-8).
Week 10
Houston Texans 36, Jaguars 29
- Site: NRG Stadium in Houston, Tex.
- What happened: Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington scored two touchdowns, and the Jaguars squandered a 19-point fourth-quarter lead to lose for a third time in four games. Washington scored on a 7-yard first-quarter touchdown reception and his 73-yard second-quarter punt return gave the Jaguars a 17-0 lead. Running back Travis Etienne Jr.'s 6-yard run gave the Jaguars a three-score lead late in the third quarter, but the Jaguars managed just one first down and 11 total yards while being shut out in the fourth quarter.
- Key play: Texans backup quarterback Davis Mills' 17-yard scramble with :31 remaining in the fourth quarter capped the Texans' rally, giving them a 30-29 lead. The two-point attempt failed and Texans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins returned a fumble by Lawrence 32 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play.
- Notable: The 19-point lead marked the largest the Jaguars ever held in a loss, with the Jaguars slipping two-and-a-half games behind the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South.
- Quoting Lawrence: "We have to be able to put a team away when you have them down that much. You have to be able to close those games out. You have to win those. We had our opportunities, we just didn't take advantage of them."
- Quoting Coen: "The reality is we gave up a 19-point lead to lose the game, and part of winning in the National Football League is sustaining a lead. We just needed one stop, didn't get one and against a tough defense was hard, points were hard to come by. You have a 19-point lead and you can't hold on to it. That's disappointing. That's really disappointing against an in-division opponent on the road where you're controlling the game for the majority of it, with all three phases having an impact."
- Tracking the South: Indianapolis Colts (8-2), Jaguars (5-4), Houston Texans (4-5), Tennessee Titans (1-8).
