Top Storylines From Jaguars' Thrilling Week 5 Win Over Eagles: Stuffing the Run - Again

top storylines

LONDON – Senior writer John Oehser examines five key storylines from the Jaguars' 19-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in a 2026 Week 5 game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, United Kingdom, Sunday

1.D-Ham … the man. DaVon Hamilton doesn't practice long-snapping much, and he's in no hurry to do it for real again any time soon. But he snapped well enough under pressure Sunday to be a major storyline in one of the Jaguars' most memorable victories in recent memory. "You can't make it up," quarterback Trevor Lawrence said of Hamilton's role Sunday. "It's crazy." Hamilton, one of the NFL's best nose tackles, long-snapped Sunday after All-Pro long snapper Ross Matiscik sustained a first-quarter shoulder injury. "Whatever I can do, do it to help our team," Hamilton said. Hamilton snapped eight times Sunday, including on kicker Cam Little's 57-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. "I wasn't that nervous for that one," Hamilton said. "It just is what it is, got to do a job, get it done. Head Coach Liam Coen said Hamilton, who also snapped for Matiscik in a road victory over the Tennessee Titans last season, practices long snapping "a few snaps a week, maybe" – doing so mostly in walkthrough situations. "It's not in a live setting," Coen said, adding of Hamilton, "We trust him to do it." Said Hamilton, "Hopefully, I don't have to do it next week and we can move on. But it was fun."

2.Veteran leader, mammoth moment. One of Sunday's key moments came from a player who quickly has earned respect of the Jaguars' organization, particularly Coen. Reserve running back/kick returner Ameer Abdullah's 53-yard kickoff return that set up Little's game-winning field goal came immediately after Eagles kicker Jake Elliott's 48-yard field goal gave the Eagles a 17-16 lead with :08 remaining. Abdullah not only got the Jaguars in Little's range, he counted time during the return and got down with :01 remaining to allow Little time for the kick. "That's that dude," Coen said, adding that Abdullah – despite just joining the team late in the spring – had four or five votes for team captain. Added Coen, "He takes care of his mind, he takes care of his body, he prepares to be a starter. He has been one of the best teammates. He's just such a great human being and a guy I cannot say enough about it. He has gone through so much in the last six months. I pray for him. I love him to death. I'm so happy he's a Jaguar and I'm very proud of him."

3. P-Dub – yet again. The Jaguars moved consistently much of Sunday, outgaining the Eagles 408-232 with 18 first downs to 13 for the Eagles. But while they failed to convert on two possessions inside the Eagles 5, they converted from long range twice – with both touchdowns coming on passes from Lawrence to wide receiver Parker Washington. Lawrence completed 24 of 39 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns with one interception Sunday. Washington caught six passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. "We consider him an elite wide receiver," Lawrence said of Washington, who has 22 receptions for 352 yards and four touchdowns this season. "I don't know what everybody else thinks. That's what's important, what we believe – the faith and trust I have in him and our whole team has in him. That's really all that matters. Everybody on the outside will learn. We know what we have."

4.Flag day, Part II. The Jaguars, a week after being penalized a season-high 13 times for 125 yards in a Week 4 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, were penalized 13 times for 100 yards Sunday. Five came for 43 yards in the first half, including a 13-yard interference penalty on cornerback Travis Hunter that turned third-and-goal from the 17 into first-and-goal at the 3 – with Eagles running back Will Shipley's 2-yard run tying the game 7-7 two plays later. A holding penalty on linebacker Branson Combs that was part of offsetting penalties nullified a 90-yard touchdown return by Jaguars rookie wide receiver Josh Cameron on the opening kickoff. "Twenty penalties between the two teams, felt like it was definitely stop and go," Coen said. "Challenging to overcome. It felt every time we went positive in the run game, we'd get an eight to ten-yard run and then we're back negative. We get a completion, and we're back negative. Got to go watch the tape and clean up what we can control because that's all we can do."

5.Stuffing the run – again. The Jaguars, the No. 1 defense in the NFL against the run last season, entered Sunday ranked second in the NFL in the area this season and held the Eagles to 22 yards rushing on 18 carries. Running back Dameon Pierce rushed for 14 yards on 11 carries for the Eagles, who were without their two leading rushers – All-Pro Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby – because of injuries. "They're massive," Coen said of the Eagles. "To hold them to 22 yards rushing is pretty impressive regardless of who's carrying the football." Said Hamilton, "We preach it every week. We really want to do as good as we can to make them one-dimensional. I think we've been doing a great job of that."
