JACKSONVILLE – They're getting deeper, and that's a good thing.

The Jaguars this past weekend trimmed the roster to 53 players, also filling their practice squad – and Head Coach Liam Coen on Wednesday discussed the makeup of the latter group.

"I would say that it's more competitive," he said.

Coen, speaking to the media Wednesday during the Jaguars' bye week between the preseason finale and the start of the regular season, covered multiple topics during a 20-minute conversation at the Miller Electric Center.

Among them: A practice squad that currently features 14 players who spent 2026 Training Camp with the Jaguars. The group also features multiple veterans with at least five years experience who spent significant time on the active roster last season – including wide receiver Austin Trammell, quarterback Nick Mullens and wide receiver Tim Jones.

"I think that you look at practice squad last year to this year, and I would say we improved,'" Coen said.

Also on the practice squad: Two 2025 draft selections, linebacker Jack Kiser and Jalen McLeod. The Jaguars also retained two rookie undrafted wide receivers who stood out during the 2026 preseason, Trebor Peña and Michael Wortham, as well as undrafted rookie quarterback Joey Aguilar.

"There's a mix of some guys that you feel like you can elevate, and there ars some guys that you feel like maybe need a little bit more time to keep pouring into and keep working with," Coen said, adding of Aguilar, "He has a little gamer in him."

Aguilar, who played collegiately at the University of Tennessee, completed 16 of 20 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in three preseason games.

"He did some nice things," Coen said. "He has a little feel. The game kind of makes sense to him. We want to keep working with him, keep developing, keep getting him in our system, because it's very different than what he was doing in college.

"He's calm on game day. He has a good demeanor. I've really liked working with him thus far. I think he has gotten better. It's good. I like having him."

Defensive tackle Matt Dickerson, tight end Quintin Morris and linebacker Branson Combs are all on the Jaguars' initial 2026 53-player regular season after beginning last season on the practice squad.

"The guys on the team know that it's earned and that if they do perform in practice, they do all the little things right and an op presents itself, we will elevate," Coen said. "You want your guys to stay, but also attracting, maybe, and recruiting some of the guys that we were able to go get outside of the building.

"They see some of those examples from last year, and now it's like, 'OK, well, there is an op. There is a path and an avenue for me to potentially get on the grass.'"

NOTABLE

Wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Brian Thomas Jr. should be ready for the regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Stadium September 13, Coen said Wednesday. Meyers had a hand/thumb issue late in the preseason and Thomas had a shoulder issue briefly during that period. Coen said Meyers practiced Tuesday, the same day Thomas was "full go." Added Coen of the pair, "No issues."

Coen on Wednesday discussed the team's versatility and depth at receiver, a group that includes not only Meyers and Thomas, but Parker Washington and wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. Washington last season caught 58 passes for 847 yards and five touchdowns, with Thomas catching 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns. Meyers caught 42 passes for 483 yards and three touchdowns in nine games with the Jaguars and Hunter caught 28 passes for 298 yards and one touchdown in seven games. "It's obviously sometimes a good problem to have," Coen said. "Every one of them is going to have plays schemed for them. There's no question. All those guys will have that, and then it's on the plays that aren't designed to them, are they winning on the backside? Are they winning as the No. 2 or 3 guys in the progression, to where [quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence] can trust to be able to move on? The good thing about the group is all being talented and having their own roles is within any given play. All three of them specifically have put some really good stuff on tape from spring to now and the trust and reliability factor with Trevor and those guys is in a good place. I think Trevor's excited about the group of guys he has to throw to."
