Kicker Cam Little's 70-Yarder Gives Jaguars Unique Options at Midfield

JACKSONVILLE – This one resonated a bit longer than usual.

And why not? When a player makes a transcendent play, one that reshapes possibilities, it's going to linger and get discussed – and make no mistake: Cam Little's reshaping kick got discussed around the Jaguars Monday.

"That was a special moment," Jaguars special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said.

Little, the Jaguars' second-year kicker, kicked a 70-yard field goal on the final play of the first half in a 31-25 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2025 preseason opener at EverBank Stadium Saturday. The kick would have broken the NFL record for longest field goal by four yards had it been a regular-season game – and, notably, the kick surprised few around the Jaguars.

"You see him do it all the time," Jaguars punter/holder Logan Cooke said. "He hit a 72[-yarder] out here [in a recent practice] in a two-minute drill. You know he has the leg, so when he hits it straight you're like, 'All right. It has to be good.'''

Jaguars teammates celebrated wildly following the kick Saturday, with defensive end Travon Walker on Monday calling it "something special to see."

"It's really once in a lifetime," Walker said. "You really don't get to see that much. Hats off to Cam. He's a great kicker. We don't see him a lot, but when we go to field goal, we know he can kick 50-yarders easy. We see that every now and then.

"He's a great kicker. He works his ass off."

Little said after Saturday's game he expects some kicker around the NFL to convert from 70 yards this season and officially break the record of 66 yards – held by former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen on Monday addressed the on-field implications of Little having the leg strength to be effective from such a range.

"I don't know if we're going to be going for 70-yarders in the first and second quarter of the game, but maybe the kick line to gain is maybe a little bit moved back for us in some ways," Coen said. "It was such a cool moment, obviously, as we've talked about, and to have the ability to do it – whether it's end of half, end of game, critical moments, we need points. You feel like you've got a weapon to go and give yourselves a chance."

Coen, too, said Cooke – a Pro Bowl selection last season and one of the NFL's best punters at pinning opponents inside the 20 – gives the Jaguars unique options when the offense reaches midfield.

"It's an interesting study," Coen said. "We've talked about the analytics behind fourth downs and being aggressive while also having a guy that can make kicks from that range and then also having a punter who can put the ball in multiple spots.

"Those are some decisions we're going to have to make as a staff and to work through those some of those dynamics. You'd love to be aggressive, especially on the plus side of the 50 to go for it and continue to keep your offense on the grass. Then you've got a guy that can kick it from 70, and you've got a punter that can pin it.

"We'll have to make some decisions when the time comes."

  • Farwell on the Jaguars' specialists: "They're the best in the game, then throw [long snapper] Ross [Matiscik] in there as a two-time Pro Bowler [each of the last two seasons]. We're among some really good players. They work every day and that's the cool thing is you see from them every day – the way they work, the way they prepare. They want to be great every single day, and it shows up come game days in the stadium."
  • Coen on the 53-player regular-season roster after the first preseason game with two preseason games remaining: "The games always help you a little bit just to see if there are guys that really stand out and shine in the game atmosphere that don't maybe get a ton of opportunities in practice. I don't necessarily feel like anything changed from the game from last week to now, but we still have two more opportunities to do so. I think you feel pretty confident about maybe 50 [roster spots] or so. Then there are a couple of spots here and there that you feel like are going to probably go a couple more weeks."
