Pads, Playmakers, and Physicality: Jaguars Camp Takeaways

Day 6 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2025 Training Camp continued Tuesday.

It was the fifth day of the first training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a two hour practice in helmets and shoulder pads at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Tuesday's "campservations:"

John Oehser, Jaguars Senior Writer…

  • Day 6 felt like the first "real camp" practice of '25 training camp, with Tuesday being the second day in pads – and the first full-length practice in pads – after a four-day pad-less "ramp-up" period and a comparatively short Day 5 practice. The day brought the expected intensity of a full-pad practice in intense Florida heat, and it also brought a breakout day for veteran wide receiver Dyami Brown. Brown, who signed with the Jaguars in March as an unrestricted free agent from Washington, was expected to bring a big-play element to complement wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter. He showed that element big-time throughout the offseason program – and he showed it again Tuesday morning with a multiple long end-around runs and a deep completion late in practice from starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence in a late-game situational drill. He also caught a touchdown pass from Lawrence in red-zone work. This came after the Jaguars began a second practice with a tone-setting early "team run" period. The Jaguars are emphasizing the run and stopping the run under Head Coach Liam Coen, and the first two days have shown that emphasis. We're into camp now. Time to grind.

Brian Sexton, Senior Correspondent…

  • Coen mentioned during his news conference Monday that the safeties were literally the last line of defense and he was encouraged by what he had seen from on the back end of the defense. So, my focus went there on Tuesday – and Eric Murray, Andrew Wingard and Antonio Johnson didn't disappoint. Johnson put his big frame in the middle of a hole taking on running back Tank Bigsby in a nice early practice stop, Murray was all over tight end Brenton Strange on multiple occasions and Wingard was characteristically in the mix. Wingard flashed on a few occasions to back up what Coen discussed the day before. This group must be better than it was a season ago when the secondary gave up more big plays than any other defense in Jaguars history. Murray is a ten-year veteran who has seen it all and rookie third-round safety Caleb Ransaw is an exciting prospect who has made a few plays a week into camp. If Johnson can live up to his frame and his potential, the Jaguars will have a full house in the deep third of the defense that they can rely on instead of worry about.

  • The Jaguars put the pads on again Tuesday, and it was easily the most physical day of '25 camp so far. The 11-on-11 work focused mainly on situations: different red zone scenarios, two-minute, end of game, etc. The highlight of the day: In tight red zone, Lawrence was flushed left and fired off balance between two defenders to hit Travis Hunter in the back left corner of the end zone as Hunter reversed field from the side boundary along the back line. It was the opening play of tight red zone directly in front of the grandstand with a full grandstand of fans cheering. The team is off Wednesday, then is back for a closed practice Thursday before moving into EverBank Stadium Friday for a scrimmage.
Jacksonville, Fla. — Jaguars running backs Bhayshul Tuten (33), Travis Etienne Jr. (1) and LeQuint Allen Jr. (36) during training camp at the Miller Electric Center on July 29, 2025.

  • The injury bug is mounting as training camp continues, but it has opened the way for others to shine. Cornerback Montaric Brown will miss the remainder of training camp with a leg injury, with Jarrian Jones taking advantage of increased repetitions – including a nifty interception while guarding wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Tuesday.
  • Veteran Patrick Mekari has missed several practices with a back issue, but the offensive line doesn't seem to have missed a beat without him.
  • Free-agent addition Chuma Edoga has stepped into the role at right guard and is taking advantage of the extra reps.
  • Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. also seeing extra time on the field as Bhayshul Tuten deals with a sore hamstring. Allen is by far the best pass blocker of the running back group and looks to be making a name for himself on special teams.

The season is right around the corner and the Jaguars are preparing for a long ride ahead. Scroll to see cinematic shots from Day 6 of 2025 Training Camp. 🥵
