Newsome II "super-excited" About Opportunity to Play Sunday | Friday Quick Hits Before Week 6

2025 FRI QH THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Friday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (4-1) will play the Seattle Seahawks (3-2) at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville Sunday in a 2025 Week 6 game. A look at Friday around the Jaguars – with Head Coach Liam Coen speaking to the media for the final time before Sunday's game and new cornerback Greg Newsome II speaking for the first time since joining the team Thursday:

The Jaguars' new cornerback could play Sunday.

The Jaguars on Thursday acquired Newsome in a trade with the Cleveland Browns that sent former Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell to the Browns. Coen on Friday said the Jaguars "definitely feel like he has an opportunity to play."

"I do think it's doable," Coen said, with Newsome on Friday adding: "The goal is to beat Seattle, so I have to do whatever I can to get the playbook down as fast as I can so we can get a win. It's tough, but I'm a Northwestern man so I pride myself on my brain. I'll be all right."

Newsome arrived in Jacksonville Thursday and practiced with the Jaguars Friday.

"The plan right now is to be able to continue to onboard him as much as we can through the next few days here," Coen said. "It seems like there is maybe some carryover from some of the terms he has used in the past.

"That's kind of what that part is for the next few days, is what can he correlate from where he has been in the past, from Cleveland to here, things that may be similar that he can try to connect the dots on."

Added Newsome: "I'm trying to play as much as I can. Whatever I can pick up and retain, so whatever the coaches' decision is. I'm super-excited to be here, to be with this defense. We're No. 1 in takeaways and looking to continue that."

Coen on Friday praised Newsome as a "smart football player" and "feisty in defense in the pass."

"I watched him be put in a lot of difficult downs at times this year against some really quality opponents and competed his tail off," Coen said. "He has done a nice job finding the football and I believe he has a lot of confidence as a player just in general and I appreciate that."

Coen said the key to Newsome playing Sunday is "making sure we have the right calls for when he is in and making sure we're doing things that ultimately he's comfortable with that doesn't just hinder our defense, either."

"We're not going to change our calls because Greg's in the game," Coen said. "That's not how it'll go. It's just a matter of making sure we put him in a position to be successful as well."

Coen said he addressed the team briefly – and spoke to multiple players individually – following the trade of Campbell, a popular player who was in his fifth season with the Jaguars. Coen called Campbell an "unbelievable human."

"I have a lot of respect for Tyson Campbell and everybody else does in this building," Coen said. "It's hard to lose a guy that everybody likes, so it's something you have to be aware of as a coach and have some conversations with the guys so that they understand fully some of the reasoning.

"But also, 'Hey, we have a job to go do, we have a game to go win and we're trying to do what we think is best for the team and for the organization and we have a huge opportunity this weekend.'"

The Jaguars on Friday released their third and final injury report of the week, with center Robert Hainsey listed as doubtful after practicing limited Friday. He missed practice Wednesday and Thursday after sustaining a hamstring injury in a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Monday.

Rookie Jonah Monheim, who played 17 snaps against the Chiefs, could make his first NFL start at center Sunday. Reserve offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen and starting right guard Patrick Mekari are options at backup center Sunday, Coen said.

"Jonah, all through training camp, got better and better, earned a lot of trust and respect around here in the building," Coen said. "He has prepared like a pro all throughout this process and he stepped up the other night in a couple moments where we needed him to.

"If he has to be the guy, if he's going to be the guy, we've got a lot of trust that that's going to be a good deal for us."

Defensive end Travon Walker was listed without status, meaning he is expected to be available to play Sunday. He missed the victory over the Chiefs after undergoing wrist surgery the previous Monday.

Coen said Friday he was "very hopeful" Walker will play Sunday, with Walker practicing more full speed this week than last week.

"That's helpful being able to see him use it a little bit more and although it's just still awkward using your hand where you don't have a hand that you really use," Coen said. "He's doing everything he can right now."

Other Jaguars players listed on Friday's report without status and expected to be available Sunday: Running back Bhayshul Tuten (shoulder), starting wide receiver Dyami Brown (shoulder), starting left guard Ezra Cleveland (ankle), starting right tackle Anton Harrison (elbow), starting right guard Patrick Mekari (knee) and starting safety Eric Murray (neck).

Linebacker Yasir Abdullah, out the last two games with a hamstring, was listed as questionable Friday.
