Newsome Brings "multiple skill set…" To Jaguars Defense | Thursday Insider Before Week 6

2025 THURS INSIDER THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – Call this one the right fit at the right time.

The Jaguars on Thursday acquired cornerback Greg Newsome II from the Cleveland Browns in a trade that sent former Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell – a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft – and a 2026 seventh-round selection to the Browns.

The Jaguars also acquired a '26 sixth-round selection in the trade.

"He has really good man-to-man skills. He has done a good job in zone, competitive at the point of attack. Really excited about him.

"He will add a bunch to us."

Newsome, the No. 26 overall selection by the Browns in the 2021 NFL Draft, has three career interceptions – with one returned for a touchdown – with 178 tackles including 140 solos.

He has 37 career passes defensed with six tackles for loss, two quarterback hits and a sack in 59 games with 47 starts.

Campanile also praised Newsome's playstyle, saying it fits with the Jaguars' approach under Campanile of playing aggressively at the point of attack.

"If you watch him play man to man, he's really sticky in coverage, competes at the catch point – then in zone coverage, he's a savvy player," Campanile said. "What we look at and we're excited about, he has really good ball skills, ability to break and drive on the ball.

"Anytime you get a smart, aggressive player, we're fired up about it."

Asked how quickly Newsome might be available, Campanile said: "We'll find out pretty quick here. We're going to try and get him going as fast as we can and see how all that goes. He's a very bright guy. I think he will be quick on the uptake.

"Getting him ready for the game plan, that's Priority No. 1 right now."

Also key to the Jaguars' cornerback position:

  • The play of fourth-year cornerback Montaric Brown, who has played at a high level since returning from an ankle injury that kept him out of training camp, the preseason and the first three 2025 regular-season games.

Brown has played 40 percent of snaps defensively the past two weeks, registering a pass defensed against the Chiefs.

"We had a really good feeling about Buster after the spring," Campanile said. "He had a great spring for us and unfortunately got hurt the first day of summer camp. That obviously slowed his process, but he's really kind of hit the ground running since he has been back.

"He's overall a really good player for us, a guy I love coaching and he's doing a good job for us. I always feel good when Buster's in there, to be honest with you. We definitely believe in him and love his work ethic.

"He's a guy I love to coach. I don't think that's a secret. He really has a great play style, and he works his tail off every day."

  • Rookie Jonah Monheim could start Sunday if veteran center Robert Hainsey can't play because of a hamstring injury sustained in a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Monday. A seventh-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, Monheim played 17 snaps Monday after Hainsey left the game, with offensive coordinator Grant Udinksi calling Monheim's composure in the situation "phenomenal." "For those guys (the rest of the offensive line) to not feel really any difference in the terms of the communication, the operation, is a testament to his work ethic and his preparation and how diligent he is," Udinski said Thursday. The Jaguars during training camp rotated much of the offensive line extensively, with the exception Hainsey getting most of the starting repetitions at center. "He (Monheim) was able to go in there and mesh with those guys," Udinski said. "It's not just the center to quarterback. It's also the center to guard, center communicating out to the tackle, center communicating out to the tight ends at times. That he was able to go in there in that situation, in that environment with the game on the line, and really leave the full playbook open to us is awesome to have that type of flexibility from not only a rookie, but just a backup center in general." …
