Quick Hits | Hunter's Role Continues to Evolve With More Playing Time

2025 WED QH THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Wednesday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (1-1) will host the two-time defending AFC South champion Houston Texans (0-2) in a 2025 Week 3 division game at EverBank Stadium Sunday. A look at Wednesday around the Jaguars – with Head Coach Liam Coen speaking to the media before practice and quarterback Trevor Lawrence among players speaking following practice:

Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter played his most extensive snaps of the season defensively this past week, with Coen saying he feels increasingly good about Hunter's approach and evolving play time.

"If anything, we probably have a little bit more encouragement and excitement about where things went this last week in terms of being able to handle that workload," Coen said. "We have to manage it, though. It's something we are constantly evaluating."

Hunter has played 61% of the Jaguars' snaps on offense in two games and 37 on defense, playing 43 snaps on defense last week in a 31-27 road loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and 42 on offense. He played 42 snaps on offense and 6 on defense in a Week 1 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

"We were very intentional last week, specifically about some of the volume and mileage that we were looking at deploying, and it showed up on Sunday," Coen said. "There are definitely things to clean up about that in terms of detailing the preparation and making sure of all the formations, all the alignments, but we can help him, too – and maybe simplify some of that stuff as well for him.

"We're very happy with where things were last week in terms of our organization with him, his preparation. We'll kind of continue to do that this week as we continue to just evaluate how many snaps and what it's going to look like each week.

"The way that he prepared, the way that he practiced was exactly what we're hunting up."

The Jaguars on Wednesday released their first of three injury reports for the week, with tight end Hunter Long and starting left guard Ezra Cleveland missing practice Wednesday with ankle injuries sustained Sunday.

Reserve running back Bhayshul Tuten practiced limited with a shoulder issue after playing against the Bengals, with rookie guard Wyatt Milum practicing limited with a knee issue that kept him out of the first two games. Cornerback Jarrian Jones practiced limited with a back injury sustained Sunday.

Reserve cornerback Montaric Brown practiced full after missing the first two games with an ankle injury and starting wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. practiced full with a wrist issue.

Coen on the Jaguars releasing safety Darnell Savage Tuesday:

"We wish him nothing but the best. At this time, best for both parties – for him to have a runway to go and get on the grass. We wish him nothing but the best."

Jacksonville, Fla. — Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson (26) during practice at the Miller Electric Center on September 3, 2025.

Savage's release likely will mean an increased role for third-year safety Antonio Johnson, who has developed in two seasons into a top special teams player and who impressed coaches throughout the offseason program and training camp.

Coen said Johnson could be the third safety moving forward alongside Andrew Wingard and Eric Murray when the Jaguars play three-safety packages.

"That's the goal," Coen said. "Antonio has flashed some really good stuff since we've all gotten here."

Coen called Johnson "a big dude who can run" and called the coming weeks "a big opportunity for the former fifth-round selection."

"That's what we communicated to him was, 'Man, we've got confidence in you. Now, you've got to go and take it and earn it and show it every single day because you have the ability to do so,'" Coen said. "When Antonio's playing confident, playing fast and knows exactly what he is doing … man, he can be disruptive.

"He can impact the game for us in a positive way."

Jacksonville, Fla. — Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis (2) during practice at the Miller Electric Center on September 17, 2025.

Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis on Sunday's game against the Texans:

"We have to play with heart. That's really what it comes down to, playing with heart and not thinking about the competition – understanding that they have to come through us. We are serious contenders ourselves, too. Don't think the game is too much or anything like that. Just go out and there and do what we're taught to do and play with heart, and play hard. If we do that, it's going to be hard to beat us."
