Strange on Responding to Change Before Week 13: "We understand what it takes…"

WK13 RESPONDING TO CHANGE

JACKSONVILLE – They keep finding ways.

As Jaguars veteran linebacker Dennis Gardeck sees it, if the ways aren't always pretty – and if they're often just, plain stressful – that's OK.

The Jaguars are winning, and contending. And that's good.

"It's awesome for us," he said.

Gardeck spoke to the media Monday – a day after the Jaguars' second overtime victory in four games, this one 27-24 over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Head Coach Liam Coen said the team knew it would be a close game decided late – a game in which the Jaguars had to again overcome change and adversity.

"The resiliency, support, the belief in overtime from the guys was extremely strong and I'm proud of the way we were able to finish the game," he said.

Sunday marked the Jaguars fifth one-score victory of the 2025 regular season, continuing what has become their season-defining trend of playing – and often winning – in difficult circumstances.

"That's a big thing in football," tight end Brenton Strange said. "There's always going to be adversity at some point in time in the game, and I think that we do a good job of just sticking together. Coach Liam always says we want to come like this right here (close motion with interlocking fingers).

"It's great that we do that, and we've got to continue to do that for the rest of the year, and I think it'll take us to the places that we want to go."

The Jaguars this season are 5-3 in 1-score games after finishing 3-10 in such games last season. They beat the Houston Texans 17-10 in Week 3, the San Francisco 49ers 26-21 in Week 4, the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 in Week 5 and the Las Vegas Raiders, 30-29, in overtime in Week 9.

"It's a different team [this season]," Strange said. "We have a lot of the same guys, but we've been through those things before. We've been on the other side, and we understand what it takes, and we understand what we have to do.

"Another thing is our preparation. We work hard every single week, come out of practice, and we do what we need to do during the week for practice, and I think that it pays off during the game."

Gardeck agreed, saying, "The confidence comes from our preparation."

"That has also been consistent throughout the season," Gardeck said. "You have to face some adversity to really feel the confidence, but being just as confident through the aversity kind of reinforces it."

The Jaguars (7-4) on Sunday rallied from two four-point second-half deficits – 14-10 and 21-17. They took the lead on a 52-yard field goal by kicker Cam Little with 7:46 remaining in overtime, then secured the victory when safety Andrew Wingard defensed a deep pass by Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett on fourth-and-4 from the Jaguars 42 with 4:07 remaining in overtime.

The victory marked the second in as many weeks for the Jaguars (7-4), who enter a Week 13 road game against the Tennessee Titans (1-10) Sunday a game behind the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-3).

"It's good we can lean on each other," Gardeck said. "I think it builds trust in all three phases of the ball, and each other on the same side of the ball. I think it's something that brings the locker room together. And I feel like we're a closer team after that win."

NOTABLE

  • Gardeck registered a season-high 1.5 sacks Sunday, saying the chance to play against his former team absolutely provided motivation. Gardeck, an eighth-year NFL veteran, signed with the Cardinals as a collegiate free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft and registered 17 sacks in seven seasons with the organization. "I definitely had them circled as soon as I signed out here," he said. "It was kind of strange for it to be a big deal to me before the season and everything. Something that I had kind of looked forward to." Gardeck had numerous friends and family at the game – including his mother, Terri, whose birthday was Sunday. "It didn't seem like it was going to be that big of a deal until Sunday morning where hopping on the bus, getting ready to go over there and I'm like, 'Man, like I'm excited for this one,'" Gardeck said. "It was really cool."
