Mock Draft Tracker 4.0: TE, CB trending in Round 1

brian THUMB

JACKSONVILLE – Some favorites are developing.

That in no way means those favorited things will happen, and there's no guarantee the Jaguars will use their first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft on a tight end or cornerback.

But those are the directions analysts are leaning when it comes to the Jaguars and the '23 draft, and those positions dominated this week's fourth version of the jaguars.com 2023 mock draft tracker. Eight of seventeen analysts in the tracker projected the Jaguars to select a tight end with their selection in Round 1.

Three analysts projected Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid to the Jaguars at No. 24 overall.

"With Evan Engram hitting free agency, the Jaguars can stand to secure another receiving tight end to build rapport with quarterback Trevor Lawrence," Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus wrote of Kincaid. "The tight end dropped only two of his 109 catchable passes at Utah."

Two other analysts projected Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave to the Jaguars there.

"His blocking is a work in progress but he'll be a contributor in the passing game from Day 1," Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports wrote of Musgrave.

Another popular projection to the Jaguars in Round 1: Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer.

"If Evan Engram costs too much to bring back, Mayer is a good backup plan," Joe Broback of Pro Football Network wrote. "His ability to dominate as a blocker stands out, but Mayer also showed his reliability this season."

Six other prominent analysts in this week's tracker projected cornerback at No. 24 for the Jaguars, with three projecting South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith there.

"Cam Smith is a versatile cover that can play man or zone and is very competitive—just the type of player that the Jaguars need to solidify this upward trend as an organization," Keith Sanchez of the Draft Network wrote, with Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network calling Smith "An explosive, twitchy athlete with great dual-sided run support and coverage playmaking value, and he'd set the tone with his chippy attitude."

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports projected Alabama safety Brian Branch to the Jaguars in Round 1, writing: "Branch is everywhere in the secondary, a classic playmaker who can man any position on the back end. He's what the Jaguars need on defense."

(Note: The Jaguars are projected to hold the No. 25 selection in Round 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Miami Dolphins have forfeited the No. 21 selection, so the Jaguars hold the 24th selection).
