JACKSONVILLE – He's back, and that's a big positive for the Jaguars' defense.
Cornerback Jourdan Lewis is participating full in Jaguars 2026 Training Camp – and while he's still working to feel as comfortable as he would like, he's feeling good about his progress. His teammates and coaches like it, too.
"Getting my footing and stuff like that," he said.
Lewis, a veteran leader on and off the field entering his second season with the Jaguars, spoke to the media Monday after Day 5 camp practice at the Miller Electric Center. Head Coach Liam Coen spoke, too, saying of Lewis' return from a season-ending injury last season:
"We all notice when J-Lew's out there."
Lewis, after missing the last two games of last season with a foot injury, practiced mostly to the side while rehabilitating this offseason. He has participated fully in the first five days of '26 camp.
"I feel good," he said. "It's just about trusting it, trusting the way I break, trusting the way I process, going out there and playing. Just getting those faculties back, getting that feel back, that instinct back and putting a consistent camp together.
"Just being healthy, that's really what I want to focus on – and doing the technique right and being out here to put my best foot forward for the team."
Lewis, who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent from the Dallas Cowboys in the 2025 season, emerged quickly last season as a veteran leader. Coen said his presence has been felt quickly during training camp in multiple areas including "communication, confidence, his ability to get everybody on the same page."
"He's feisty," Coen said. "He brings a mentality and toughness. He had a rep the other day, in the run game, where a tight end was trying to block him. I forget which one. And he locked, shed, made the play. He just brings a mentality and toughness to our defense."
Lewis in his 10th NFL season is the Jaguars' most veteran cornerback. Cornerback Montaric Brown, who emerged as a full-time starter last season and who signed a contract extension in the offseason, spoke on Monday of Lewis' "leadership and maturity."
"He sets the standard," Brown said. "He makes sure we know the standard and continue to play to a high level. He always leads us and has us on the right track."
Lewis, like the rest of the Jaguars' secondary, also is entering his first season playing for Jaguars defensive pass game coordinator Mathieu Araujo. He spent the past four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, including the last two as cornerbacks coach.
"It has been kind of weird when you don't play football, especially when you have a new defensive back coach," Lewis said. "He's very technical so just making sure that we get everything in individual right. Still messing it up, but just keep chopping away at it, trying to get better at it and continue to get better."
Despite the less-than-ideal conditions and heavy rain, the Jaguars were able to get outside and run around in pads for the first time on Day 5 of Training Camp. Check out the best photos here 📸 ➡️

And while there's a lot of new for Lewis as '26 camp begins, he said he and the rest of the defense – and the secondary – should benefit from playing a second season under coordinator Anthony Campanile.
"We're just building on what we did last year and we have the right staff and the right guys to go out there and compete with anybody and go out there and win a lot of games." Lewis said. "So, it feels good to be in the system consistently since I haven't been in the same system since 2023. I know how these young guys feel.
"I know they're excited to be in the same system and have the right guys around them to make sure that they flourish and get better."
NOTABLE
- Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. made perhaps the play of the day on Day 5 – a one-handed reception down the right sideline in the rain on a deep pass from quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That play continued a strong training camp and offseason for Thomas, a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie in 2024 who caught 47 passes for 708 yards and two touchdowns last season. "When you can throw the ball over somebody's head, it's a threat," Coen said. "It's something that we need. We need not just him to be able to do that, but win on some of the other reps. He's run a lot of routes out here that maybe weren't getting targeted to him that he's won as well that I've been pleased with. It brings everybody up. It elevates everybody's game when BT is playing at his highest level."
