Jaguars Players Embrace New Direction During Ten OTA Days

060525 Day 10 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars held Day 10 of their 2025 organized team activities at the Miller Electric Center Thursday.

Three Jaguars media members – senior writer John Oehser, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter/producer Kainani Stevens – shared an observation following Thursday's practice. Here they are:

  • Senior Writer John Oehser: The '25 offseason soon draws to a close, but make no mistake: While Head Coach Liam Coen liked a lot about what he has seen during three weeks of OTAs, the most important thing he is liking is the development of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. And it has been clear for the last week and a half that Coen and others around the Jaguars increasingly are liking that development very much. Lawrence in his fifth NFL season has focused this offseason on learning the details of Coen's footwork-, timing-based scheme – and the degree to which Coen praised Lawrence in this area Thursday ranks among the most important soundbites of the '25 offseason program. Coen called Lawrence’s footwork “drastically improved,” adding: "He has taken a step in that area as well as just the overall operation." Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter The Jaguars' offensive line. The pass rush. The secondary. Perhaps more important than those: The clear and total buy in from players about the new direction of the organization; you can't win without that the 2025 Jaguars at this early stage clearly have it. All are key storylines for '25, and good things are being said about them all. But if Lawrence's '25 offseason progress translates to the regular season, the prospects for his future – and for the 2025 season – could be better than many outside the organization realize.

  • Senior Reporter/ Editor J.P. Shadrick: The final OTA practice of the offseason program featured plenty of red-zone work. It also provided two new Jaguars with an opportunity to get on the field for the first time with the team: Defensive end Dawuane Smoot and wide receiver Trenton Irwin. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck was in attendance but off to the side. With only a few practices remaining in the offseason, these next few days are key to get these veteran players on a similar level headed into the dead period so they can come back for training camp ready to roll. Also: Original Jaguars Owner Wayne Weaver attended practice Thursday, and had pre-practice visits with General Manager James Gladstone and Coen. It's a cool connection from the birth of the franchise to the future.
  • Team Reporter/Producer Kainani Stevens: The voluntary portion of the offseason has now concluded, and my greatest takeaway has been the overall enthusiasm inside the building. OTAs are not mandatory, yet the Jaguars saw close to 100 percent turnout throughout the last three weeks. The energy shift was notable from the outset and much appreciated considering how things ended for the team last season. I'm also very encouraged by the youth in the wide receiver room. First round pick Travis Hunter has looked the part thus far and I'm looking forward to see his evolution in training camp. Also, Brian Thomas Jr. looks notably more comfortable at practice as he prepares for his second professional season.
